# Bitcoin Falls Below $77,000 as Traders Position for a Federal Reserve Hike

Ninety-five of the 100 largest digital assets declined over 24 hours while gold held near $4,390 an ounce, a split that again separates the two assets sold as inflation hedges.

Bitcoin traded below $77,000 on Friday morning in Asia after a week of losses. [CoinDesk reported that 95 of the CoinDesk 100 fell over the previous 24 hours, with Zcash leading the declines, and that bitcoin has lost more than 5 percent on the week as traders position for a Federal Reserve rate increase](https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/09/11/bitcoin-below-usd77-000-zcash-leads-losses-as-traders-bet-on-a-fed-rate-hike).

Gold did not follow the same pattern. [Trading Economics data show gold near $4,390 an ounce on September 10, up about 21 percent from a year earlier](https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/gold), holding while the same rate expectations pushed bond yields and the dollar higher. The divergence is now a repeated pattern. The rising cost of money hits assets whose price depends on the supply of leverage and liquidity, and digital assets are among them. Gold responds to the demand for a monetary asset outside the banking system, which higher policy rates do not eliminate while inflation runs above 3 percent.

The industry is meanwhile building infrastructure for a different customer. [CoinDesk reported that Ripple has put artificial-intelligence agents inside its $1 billion corporate treasury operation](https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/09/11/ripple-puts-ai-agents-inside-its-usd1-billion-corporate-treasury-bet), with software monitoring cash, risk and forecasts and proposing actions that a human must still approve.

The macro driver is the same one moving every other market. The [Financial Times reported that rate-rise fears are spreading through global bond markets](https://www.ft.com/content/2c9ce5b0-32ae-4460-aa89-9c80eb05ee41?syn-25a6b1a6=1) before Friday's United States inflation release, which lands hours before the weekend and days before the Federal Reserve decides.

## What this means

Bitcoin is trading on the price of dollar liquidity rather than on monetary debasement, so a hawkish inflation print pulls it down at the same moment the debasement argument sounds strongest. Leveraged holders and treasury companies that borrowed against digital assets face margin pressure first, while gold holders have faced none of that pressure this week. Either the correlation breaks after the Federal Reserve decision, which would support the digital-gold case, or bitcoin keeps tracking the Nasdaq-style liquidity trade, in which case its buyer base is risk capital and not reserve capital.

## What to watch

- Whether bitcoin declines further on a hot inflation reading, which would confirm it is trading as a liquidity-sensitive risk asset rather than an inflation hedge.
- The gold-to-bitcoin performance gap through the Federal Reserve meeting, because a widening gap changes who the marginal buyer of each asset is.
- Whether corporate holders of digital assets disclose forced sales or financing strain, which would turn a price decline into a solvency story.
