# Saudi-Led Coalition Says It Shot Down a Houthi Drone South of Mecca and Calls the Holy Cities a Red Line

Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki described it as the second attempt against Mecca since a ballistic missile launch in July 2017, while a Houthi military source denied the group threatens the holy sites.

Saudi air defenses intercepted a drone south of Mecca on Tuesday before it entered restricted airspace over the city, according to Turki al-Malki, spokesman for the Saudi-led military coalition fighting the Houthi movement in Yemen. Al-Malki said it was [the second attempt to target Mecca since a ballistic missile launch in July 2017](https://www.thehindu.com/news/international/saudi-coalition-says-houthi-drone-destroyed-near-mecca/article71470972.ece) and described the security of Islam's two holiest cities and of pilgrims as [an absolute limit that would trigger a response](https://www.scmp.com/news/world/middle-east/article/3367663/red-line-saudi-coalition-accuses-houthis-targeting-mecca-drone?utm_source=rss_feed), adding that the coalition would take deterrent measures.

The Houthi movement, which calls itself Ansar Allah, rejected the account. A military source quoted by the group's SABA news agency denied that it poses any threat to Mecca or the other holy sites. The two versions cannot both be correct, and no independent verification of the drone's intended target has been published.

The attempted strike followed a broader round of attacks between the two sides. The coalition said missiles and drones launched toward the Saudi cities of Khamis Mushayt, Abha and Taif on Monday [injured thirteen civilians](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/9/16/saudi-coalition-intercepts-drone-headed-for-mecca). Israeli reporting cited Yemeni claims that Houthi forces shot down a Saudi F1 aircraft, alongside reports of explosions near Iran's Qeshm Island in the Gulf, [according to the business daily Globes](https://www.globes.co.il/news/article.aspx?did=1001555598#utm_source=RSS).

For markets the relevant fact is geographic. Mecca sits in the western Hijaz, far from the oil infrastructure of the Eastern Province and close to the Red Sea coast. A weapon reaching that far extends the effective range of the Yemen conflict across the entire width of Saudi Arabia, which means insurers and shippers must now treat Red Sea ports and the Bab al-Mandab approach as part of the same theater as the Gulf.

## What this means

Extending the conflict's reach to western Saudi Arabia broadens the range of assets that carry a war-risk premium, from Gulf loading terminals to Red Sea ports, pipeline endpoints and the Bab al-Mandab shipping lane. War-risk insurance rates and shipping charter costs adjust to that expansion within days, and those costs fall on importers and refiners rather than on producers. The religious dimension raises the political stakes considerably, because an attack on Mecca would draw reactions from Muslim-majority countries well outside the countries currently involved in the conflict, which is how a regional conflict gains new participants.

## What to watch

- Whether the coalition carries out the deterrent measures al-Malki described, and what it strikes, since the choice of target would show whether escalation stays inside Yemen.
- War-risk insurance premiums for Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab transits, which measure how seriously the shipping industry takes the widened threat range.
- Statements from Muslim-majority governments outside the conflict, because a coordinated response would mark the point where the Yemen war becomes a broader diplomatic crisis.
