Gold, silver and bitcoin moved in different directions on Thursday. Gold traded at [$4,177.50 a troy ounce](https://fortune.com/article/current-price-of-gold-as-10-01-2026/) late in the New York session, effectively unchanged on the day, and silver changed hands near [$60.60](https://finance.yahoo.com/personal-finance/investing/article/silver-price-today-thursday-october-1-2026-silver-prices-gain-some-ground-following-the-latest-pce-report-111848782.html), gaining ground after the softer United States inflation reading. Bitcoin fell, trading [below $84,000](https://fxstreet.com/cryptocurrencies/news/bitcoin-price-forecast-btc-struggles-below-85-000-as-etf-outflows-rising-us-treasury-yields-weigh-202610010832) after failing to close above $85,000 the previous day. Rising Treasury yields and a firmer dollar were cited as the cause.

Fund flows show the same pattern. The 12 United States spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds posted [$148.7 million of net outflows on Wednesday](https://theblock.co/news/markets/2026-10-01-bitcoin-etfs-9-day-3-billion-inflow-streak-comes-to-an-end-as-149-million-exits-the-funds-417384), ending a nine-day streak that had drawn in roughly $3.1 billion, and none of the funds recorded an inflow. Bitcoin still gained about 42% over the third quarter, a figure that puts Thursday's move in context: the asset rallies when liquidity is plentiful and sells off when the discount rate on risk assets rises.

Both metals remain far below the peaks they set in late January. Silver [traded as high as $121.67 an ounce on 29 January](https://investingnews.com/daily/resource-investing/precious-metals-investing/silver-investing/what-was-the-highest-price-for-silver/), roughly double Thursday's level, and gold has not recovered its January peak either. Official demand did not fall alongside the price. Central banks bought 289 tonnes of gold in the second quarter, a quarter in which [gold's price fell sharply](https://goldsilver.com/industry-news/goldsilver-news/central-bank-gold-buying-record-q2-2026/), after 244 tonnes in the first quarter, and the World Gold Council projects 700 to 900 tonnes of official purchases for the full year.

This divergence shows two different buyers at work in hard assets. Reserve managers are buying gold for balance-sheet reasons that do not depend on the quarterly price, while private investors in bitcoin are responding to real yields and dollar liquidity. With the 30-year Treasury yield near 5.7%, cash and long-term bonds now compete directly with assets that pay no income.

## What this means

The mechanism is the real yield on dollar assets. When long Treasury yields rise and the dollar firms, the opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding asset increases, and the holders who move first are the most leverage-sensitive, which is why bitcoin and its exchange-traded funds turn before gold does. Official gold buyers face a different constraint: they are diversifying reserves away from dollar claims on a multi-year horizon, and the second quarter showed them adding through a steep price decline. The likelier outcome over the coming weeks is a continuation of the divergence, with gold supported by sovereign demand and bitcoin tracking the direction of yields and exchange-traded fund flows rather than inflation news. The read would be wrong if bitcoin rallied through a further rise in long yields and a stronger dollar, which would be the first real evidence that the digital-gold framing holds under stress.

## What to watch

- Whether spot bitcoin fund flows return to inflows or extend the outflow, the cleanest read on whether the third-quarter rally had a durable buyer base.
- The World Gold Council's next quarterly report on official purchases, which will show if central banks kept buying through the third-quarter price decline.
- The silver market's physical premiums, since a metal trading at half its January high while industrial demand persists reveals whether the January move was speculative or supply-driven.
