Flávio Bolsonaro, a senator and the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, finished first in Brazil's presidential election on Sunday. With 99.96% of polling stations counted, he had [47.04% of valid votes against 45.15% for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva](https://www.riotimesonline.com/brazil-election-first-round-results-lula-flavio-2026/). Neither candidate passed 50%, so the two will meet in a [runoff on October 25](https://agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br/politica/noticia/2026-10/quando-sera-o-segundo-turno-das-eleicoes-veja-data). The New York Times described the race as [very close](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/04/world/americas/brazil-election-lula-bolsonaro.html). Lula called the result ["unexpected"](https://www.euronews.com/2026/10/05/brazil-heads-to-a-runoff-presidential-vote-after-bolsonaro-and-lula-fail-to-acquire-outrig). Final pre-election polling by Datafolha, a Brazilian polling firm, had put Lula three points ahead on valid votes, [45% to 42%](https://www.cartacapital.com.br/politica/datafolha-lula-tem-45-e-flavio-bolsonaro-42-dos-votos-validos-em-1o-turno/).

Investors moved before Brazil's markets opened. The Argentine financial daily Ámbito reported that the iShares MSCI Brazil exchange-traded fund (ETF) [rose 9% to $41.55 in overnight trading](https://www.ambito.com/economia/mercados-brasil-festejan-victoria-flavio-bolsonaro-primera-vuelta-el-etf-salta-al-9-y-el-real-trepa-casi-4-n6329979). Real futures rose 3.78% on the same report. Ámbito attributed the buying to expectations of a change in fiscal policy under Bolsonaro. His platform calls for spending cuts, privatizations and a larger role for markets. Lula's platform keeps a larger role for the state, [according to Ámbito's comparison of the two programs](https://www.ambito.com/economia/brasil-se-polariza-lula-y-flavio-bolsonaro-definen-el-rumbo-economico-el-estado-presente-y-el-libre-mercado-n6328531). Right-leaning candidates also gained below the presidency. InfoMoney counted [10 of the 19 state governorships decided in the first round](https://www.infomoney.com.br/politica/direita-amplia-forca-nos-estados-e-vence-10-de-19-governos-no-primeiro-turno/) as wins for right-leaning candidates.

Coverage of the result differs by outlet. Western and Brazilian outlets lead with the fact that the challenger's father is in prison. The Guardian notes that Jair Bolsonaro is [in prison for plotting a military coup](https://www.theguardian.com/world/ng-interactive/2026/oct/04/brazil-presidential-election-2026-first-round-live-results). The independent Russian Telegram channel Ostorozhno Novosti reported that Jair Bolsonaro is [serving 27 years](https://t.me/ostorozhno_novosti/55585). The same post noted that Lula was himself jailed earlier on corruption charges. Supporters of both men cite their leader's imprisonment as evidence that the courts are politically motivated.

Washington stayed out of this race. MercoPress reported that President Donald Trump [declined to endorse either candidate](https://en.mercopress.com/2026/10/04/trump-declines-to-back-lula-or-flavio-bolsonaro-as-brazil-votes?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss&utm_content=main&utm_campaign=rss). Trump had endorsed candidates in recent elections in Honduras, Colombia, Chile, Argentina and Costa Rica. On the same day, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the United States [could again use its currency swap line to support Argentine President Javier Milei](https://www.clarin.com/economia/scott-bessent-vuelve-respaldar-argentinapodriamos-hacerlo-nuevo-seguro-senalo_0_TpA7kIvItz.html) ("Could we do it again? Sure"). A currency swap line is an arrangement to lend dollars to a foreign central bank. Bessent said the swap helped Milei win last year's elections.

Brazil's domestic credit picture is weaker than the overnight rally suggests. Folha reported that vehicle financing reached [its highest volume in 15 years](https://c-level.folha.uol.com.br/financas/2026/10/brasil-tem-recorde-de-financiamento-de-veiculos-em-meio-a-alta-da-inadimplencia.shtml) even as defaults rose. Interest rates are high, and many households already spend a large share of their income on debt payments.

## What this means

The rally assumes a government that will tighten public finances, but Bolsonaro won only the first round. Holders of Brazilian equities, the real and local-currency bonds now face three weeks in which each runoff poll can move prices. Foreign funds that hold less Brazil exposure than their benchmarks bear most of the risk in both directions. The consensus treats a Bolsonaro presidency as a change in fiscal policy, but no program has been tested in Congress. Brazil's household credit expansion, shown by rising vehicle financing alongside rising defaults, will constrain any government after January. In October 2018, Brazilian stocks and the real rallied strongly after Jair Bolsonaro led the first round, and most of those gains held through his runoff win. The likelier outcome is that Brazilian assets keep most of Monday's gains while runoff polls show Flávio level or ahead. Volatility should then rise as the two candidates compete for centrist and abstaining voters before October 25. A clear Lula lead in independent runoff polling would reverse the move within days. Washington's neutrality means the United States is unlikely to offer an Argentina-style backstop to either winner.

## What to watch

- Runoff polls from Datafolha and Quaest, two Brazilian polling firms. A consistent Bolsonaro lead would confirm the overnight repricing, and a Lula recovery would reverse it.
- Whether Bolsonaro names an economic team or a specific fiscal rule before the vote. A named team would turn market hopes into a concrete policy commitment.
- How Brazil's local stock market and its interest-rate futures open on Monday, compared with the overnight move in New York. The comparison will show whether domestic investors share foreign buyers' optimism.
