# Brazil's Bovespa rises 7.7% to a record after Flávio Bolsonaro finishes ahead of Lula in the first round

The real (Brazil's currency) gained 4.1% to about 5 per dollar, and the October 25 runoff depends on whether Lula can turn out some of the more than 30 million Brazilians who did not vote.

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro finished first in Sunday's first round of Brazil's presidential election. He led President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva by about 1.8 percentage points, or 2.2 million votes, [according to The Hindu](https://www.thehindu.com/news/international/brazil-presidential-election-lula-bolsonaro/article71548352.ece). Lula's supporters had expected him to win outright. [MercoPress noted](https://en.mercopress.com/2026/10/05/s-o-paulo-stocks-jump-8-and-the-real-firms-after-bolsonaro-s-first-round-win?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss&utm_content=main&utm_campaign=rss) that the polls had not predicted the result.

Markets rose sharply. The Ibovespa index gained 7.70% to close at a record 206,911.89 after reaching 209,605.70 during the session, [CNN Brasil reported](https://www.cnnbrasil.com.br/economia/money/mercado/mercado-hoje-5-outubro-2026/). The dollar fell 4.12% against the real to R$5.0022. [Brazilian market site Mais Retorno](https://maisretorno.com/portal/bolsa-sobe-554-maior-alta-desde-abril-de-2020-com-os-numeros-das-eleicoes-dolar-cai-409) called it the index's biggest gain since April 2020. In Buenos Aires, [Ámbito reported](https://www.ambito.com/economia/mercados-brasil-festejan-victoria-flavio-bolsonaro-primera-vuelta-el-etf-salta-al-9-y-el-real-trepa-casi-4-n6329979) that local certificates tracking Brazilian banks and domestic-market companies rose as much as 30%. CNN Brasil said investors were also reacting to gains in the National Congress by right-wing parties, including Bolsonaro's Liberal Party (PL).

Bolsonaro said on Monday that "the end of the PT era is decreed," [MercoPress reported](https://en.mercopress.com/2026/10/05/the-end-of-the-pt-era-is-decreed-says-flavio-bolsonaro-after-winning-the-first-round). [The New York Times](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/05/world/americas/bolsanaro-lula-brazil-presidency-trump.html) described the result as part of a rightward shift across Latin America. The Guardian called it a "far-right" surge. Argentina's President Javier Milei welcomed the result and called Lula a "communist lefty," [the Buenos Aires Times reported](https://www.batimes.com.ar/news/latin-america/milei-slams-communist-lefty-lula-revels-in-brazil-election-result.phtml).

## What this means

The market move reflects a smaller fiscal risk premium, meaning investors now expect less risk that the government will overspend. Investors are betting that a Bolsonaro presidency with a larger right-leaning Congress will restrain spending. Lower local yields and a stronger real (Brazil's currency) increase the value of bank and domestic-cyclical stocks, and they raise costs for anyone betting against the currency. The weak point is that the market has priced in a result for a runoff that has not yet taken place. A 1.8-point lead is small, and 30 million non-voters is a large pool. In August 2019, Argentine assets collapsed in a single session after a primary result the market had not expected, which shows how quickly election-driven pricing can reverse. The likelier outcome is that the real and the Bovespa keep most of Monday's gains through the runoff if polls confirm Bolsonaro's lead. The more durable test comes over the following months: whether he names an economic team and a binding fiscal rule that Congress will pass. The read is wrong if centrist voters move to Lula and polls show a lead change in the next two weeks, which would erase much of the rally.

## What to watch

- The first runoff polls. A Lula lead would show that Monday's prices assumed too much certainty.
- Whether Bolsonaro names a finance-minister candidate or commits to a specific fiscal rule before October 25. Markets would read that as evidence on whether the spending restraint they priced is real.
- How the final seat count in the National Congress breaks down, because a president's ability to pass spending limits depends on it.
