Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 650 drones flew toward the Moscow region between 8:30 p.m. on October 5 and 5 a.m. on October 6. [BFM.ru reported](https://www.bfm.ru/news/619975) that the attack was the largest in two years. [TASS](https://tass.com/emergencies/2197907) described it as among the largest in that period. Sobyanin said air defences destroyed most of the drones far from the city and shot down another 105 as they approached Moscow, [Vedomosti reported](https://www.vedomosti.ru/politics/news/2026/10/06/1234536-sobyanin-nochyu). He has said that nearly 10,000 Ukrainian drones heading for Moscow were destroyed over the past month.

Moscow region governor Andrei Vorobyov said a 20-year-old resident was killed and six people were injured, the independent Russian channel [Ostorozhno Novosti reported](https://t.me/ostorozhno_novosti/55633). He said air defences destroyed or suppressed 185 drones over 16 municipalities. In Istra, west of Moscow, ten private houses were damaged, [BFM.ru reported](https://www.bfm.ru/news/619976). Russian state media also reported cross-border attacks along the border. [RIA Novosti reported](https://ria.ru/20261006/vsu-2122489030.html) that Ukrainian forces struck the Belgorod region more than 1,800 times in a week. Ukraine's military had not identified any targets of the Moscow raid in the reporting available early on Tuesday. On September 20, Ukrainian drones [set the Moscow oil refinery on fire](https://www.nbcnews.com/world/russia/moscow-refinery-attack-ukrainian-drones-hit-kapotnya-russia-trump-war-rcna350665).

Russia is attacking Ukraine's transport links. A Russian drone struck a bridge in Zaporizhzhia overnight. The city council closed the bridge and rerouted traffic, [the Kyiv Independent reported](https://kyivindependent.com/russian-drone-strikes-zaporizhzhia-bridge-in-overnight-attack/). The strike follows several attacks on bridges in central Kyiv over the past week. All casualty and interception figures come from the warring parties and have not been independently confirmed.

## What this means

Both sides are using mass drone raids against the other's logistics and capital region, not the front line. Ukraine is targeting Moscow's air defences, refineries and air traffic. Russia is targeting the bridges that carry Ukrainian supplies. Each raid raises insurance, aviation and security costs for businesses in the targeted cities, and each death strengthens the political case against a pause on either side. In March 2025, the two sides agreed in principle to a 30-day halt on strikes against energy infrastructure, and both accused the other of violating it within days. That precedent suggests any moratorium on strikes in the rear will be partial and short. The likelier outcome is that the raids continue in the coming weeks and Russia steps up retaliation against Ukraine's bridges and power grid. Talks on a ceasefire would then move further away through the winter. The read is wrong if Washington brokers a verified mutual halt on strikes against energy and transport infrastructure, which would be the first sign that both sides accept limits on targeting.

## What to watch

- Flight restrictions and closures at Moscow's airports in the coming week, which show how much these raids cost the Russian capital's economy.
- Whether Russia hits more Dnipro River crossings, which would mean it is trying to cut Ukraine's east-west supply routes before winter.
- Russian domestic fuel prices and refinery outage reports, which show whether Ukraine's campaign is reducing Russia's refining capacity.
