Gold rose 0.4% in Asian trading after touching a two-month low, and State Bank of India economists urged the Reserve Bank of India to raise rates by half a percentage point.

The Federal Reserve released the [minutes of its September 15-16 Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting](https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/pressreleases/monetary20261007a.htm) on Wednesday. They show a committee that agreed on September's increase and leaned toward another. "Most participants assessed that another increase in the target range for the federal funds rate would likely be appropriate by year end," [the minutes said](https://www.federalreserve.gov/monetarypolicy/fomcminutes20260916.htm). The committee voted 12-0 to raise the target range to 3.75% to 4.00% after five straight meetings without a change, [according to a summary by Raisin](https://www.raisin.com/en-us/news/fomc-minutes-breakdown-rate-hike-division/). [Bloomberg reported](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-10-07/fed-minutes-show-hawkish-unity-behind-september-rate-hike) that all 19 officials, voters and non-voters, supported the move.

Kevin Warsh, the Federal Reserve chair, described the September rate increase as a step to reduce stimulus for an economy that had performed more strongly than expected. Officials still called inflation "elevated." Some wanted more increases soon, and others preferred to wait. Since the meeting, a weaker-than-expected September jobs report and downward revisions to the two previous months have reduced the likelihood investors assign to an October move, [Vantage Markets noted](https://www.vantagemarkets.com/market-news/gold-price-today-fed-minutes-october-7-2026/). The [Economic Times](https://m.economictimes.com/markets/commodities/news/gold-edges-higher-after-hitting-a-two-month-low/articleshow/134777720.cms), citing CME Group's FedWatch tool, put the odds of an increase at the October 27-28 meeting at 18% and the odds of one by December at 80%.

Gold fell when the minutes were released. Spot gold was quoted at $4,107.10 an ounce at 6:17 p.m. New York time on Wednesday, [according to Forbes](https://www.forbes.com/advisor/investing/gold-price/). By Thursday in Asia it had risen 0.4% from its two-month low earlier in the week, the Economic Times reported. The paper said investors were weighing Fed policy against geopolitical tension around Saudi Arabia.

Tightening is spreading beyond the United States. Economists at State Bank of India, the country's largest lender, said the Reserve Bank of India's next increase should be half a percentage point, which would take the repo rate (the central bank's main lending rate) to 6% from 5.50%, [Mint reported](https://www.livemint.com/economy/rbis-next-rate-hike-will-be-of-0-50-sbi-economists-11791393361828.html). They argued that global conditions are likely to become more volatile soon.

The numbers show a wide gap between the Fed's policy rate and long-term market rates. The policy rate is 3.75% to 4.00%, while the 10-year Treasury yield was 5.34% on October 6. Lenders are demanding far more than the Fed's rate to commit money for a decade. A central bank can raise the price of credit, but it cannot add barrels of oil. Much of the current inflation comes from an energy supply shock, and rate increases act on credit demand.

## What this means

Higher policy rates and a firm dollar raise the real yield that gold competes against, so gold weakens on hawkish news even when war risk is elevated. Indian borrowers and the rupee face the second effect, as Asian central banks follow the Fed to defend their currencies. The market already prices a December hike. What the minutes add is that the committee was unanimous, so the October decision now depends on data rather than on internal division. The consensus assumes Fed increases will bring long yields down by restoring credibility. The long end is moving independently of the Fed because it prices deficits and energy, so that relief may not come. The closest precedent is 1979 to 1980, when the Fed raised rates during the second oil shock. Gold peaked in January 1980 and then fell for years once real rates turned clearly positive. The desk's read is that the Fed probably holds in October and raises rates in December, while gold stays below its early-autumn levels for weeks as real yields rise. That read assumes oil does not spike further. A strike on Iran that lifts gold alongside crude, or an October inflation report strong enough to bring the hike forward to October 28, would show that geopolitical risk or inflation is driving prices more than Fed guidance.

## What to watch

- The next US consumer price report before the October 27-28 meeting. A strong reading would revive the October hike odds that the weak September jobs report reduced.
- Whether gold rises on days when Treasury yields also rise. That would show demand for protection outweighing the pull of higher real rates.
- The Reserve Bank of India's next decision, and whether it chooses the half-point step State Bank of India recommends. A large move would show emerging-market central banks putting currency defense ahead of growth.
