# Bitcoin holds above $84,000 as oil falls, despite more than $600 million of fund outflows last week

Gold rose about 0.2% to near $4,200 an ounce. Market reports tied bitcoin's gain to easing energy risk and gold's gain to continuing Middle East risk.

Bitcoin traded above $84,000 early Monday and held onto its weekend gains as oil fell, [CoinDesk reported](https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/10/12/bitcoin-shrugs-off-etf-outflows-to-trade-above-usd84-000-as-oil-falls). The rise came even though US spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) lost more than $600 million to outflows last week. Investors withdrew [$487 million on October 7 and $244 million on October 8](https://247wallst.com/investing/cryptocurrency/2026/10/10/bitcoin-etfs-lost-731-million-in-two-days-then-turned-positive-is-the-selling-over/) before flows turned positive late in the week. During that selling, bitcoin [fell to about $82,700](https://coingape.com/markets/bitcoin-price-prediction-as-etf-outflows-hit-highest-since-june-amid-strengthening-dollar/) as US Treasury yields rose and the dollar strengthened.

Gold moved by less. It [edged higher toward $4,200](https://www.investing.com/news/commodities-news/gold-edges-higher-near-4200-as-traders-weigh-energy-truce-mideast-risks-4942969) as traders weighed the energy truce against risks in the Middle East. Spot gold was [about $4,202 an ounce](https://metalcharts.org/gold-price), up 0.16% over 24 hours, with [another data provider](https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/gold) showing a 0.25% gain.

The two assets rose for opposite reasons. Bitcoin gained when lower oil prices reduced the chance of further Fed rate increases, which is how a liquidity-sensitive asset behaves. Gold gained because the Gulf conflict has not ended. When the dollar rose last week, the two assets moved apart, and this has happened at each stress point since the Iran war began.

In Washington, the failure of the Clarity Act, the crypto market-structure bill, has left the rules in the hands of regulators. Industry executives told [CoinDesk](https://www.coindesk.com/policy/2026/10/11/clarity-s-failure-could-speed-crypto-innovation-while-shielding-incumbents) they see openings in tokenization, decentralized finance (DeFi) and deal-making. Lawyers warned that rules made by agencies leave oversight of spot crypto markets unresolved and offer no lasting legal certainty.

## What this means

Bitcoin's price now depends on the expected path of US interest rates, and US rates depend on oil. Lower crude oil prices mean lower expected inflation, fewer Fed rate increases, and more money flowing into speculative assets. Investors who bought bitcoin as protection against war and currency debasement are exposed, because the asset falls when the dollar and bond yields rise, which is exactly when that protection is most needed. Gold holders have gotten the hedge they expected. The conventional view holds that bitcoin decouples from risk assets over time, but ETF ownership now ties it more closely to the same institutional flows that drive technology stocks. The more likely outcome is that bitcoin's next large move follows Wednesday's US inflation data rather than any news from the Gulf. A strong core inflation reading would bring renewed ETF outflows within days. This forecast would be proven wrong if bitcoin rises together with gold on a day when the dollar and Treasury yields also rise.

## What to watch

- Daily US spot bitcoin ETF flows this week. Two or more days of steady inflows would show that institutional selling has ended.
- Bitcoin's reaction to Wednesday's consumer price report compared with gold's. Opposite moves would confirm that the two assets respond to different forces.
- Rules from the Securities and Exchange Commission or the Commodity Futures Trading Commission on spot crypto markets. Agency rules would set the terms that Congress failed to set.
