# Chinese memory maker CXMT's chip design advance drives Korea's KOSPI below 6,000 and triggers a trading curb

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix fell more than 7% after CXMT said it will ship server memory chips built on a denser cell design that the two companies are still developing.

Asian technology shares [fell sharply on Tuesday](https://asia.nikkei.com/business/markets/asian-tech-shares-plunge-after-chinese-chipmaker-reports-key-advance) after ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), China's main producer of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), reported progress on a denser chip design. The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) [fell more than 6% and broke below 6,000](https://www.kedglobal.com/korean-stock-market/newsView/ked202610130001). The drop activated the exchange's first sell-side curb on program trading since August 19, according to KED Global. Israel's business daily Globes reported that the Korean exchange [temporarily halted trading](https://www.globes.co.il/news/article.aspx?did=1001559284#utm_source=RSS) as profit-taking extended across the technology sector, and that Nasdaq futures pointed lower.

Chinese financial media reported that CXMT plans to release [DDR5 server memory modules (a standard type of high-speed computer memory) built on a 4F² cell architecture](https://www.163.com/dy/article/L8U6TBAK0511BLFD.html) before the end of the year. The design puts more memory cells on the same wafer area and cuts the cost of producing each bit. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are still developing a comparable design. [Samsung fell about 7.8% in early trade](https://www.fx168news.com/article/1102004) after a 4.39% drop on Monday. SK Hynix fell more than 8%. In Taiwan, memory makers Nanya and Winbond [fell more than 7%](https://tw.stock.yahoo.com/news/%E9%95%B7%E9%91%ABdram%E5%82%B3%E5%A4%A7%E7%AA%81%E7%A0%B4-%E8%A8%98%E6%86%B6%E9%AB%94%E8%A1%80%E6%B5%81%E6%88%90%E6%B2%B3-%E5%8D%97%E4%BA%9E%E7%A7%91-%E8%8F%AF%E9%82%A6%E9%9B%BB%E9%87%8D%E6%8C%AB%E9%80%BE7-023300905.html). In US trading overnight, Micron [lost 3.9% and Sandisk 6%](https://news.ssbcrack.com/kospi-crashes-through-6000-samsung-sk-hynix-cxmt-memory-scare/).

The concentration of the index explains the size of the move. Samsung and SK Hynix together account for about half of the KOSPI's weight, so any doubt about Korean memory pricing power shifts the entire market. CXMT's claim has not been independently verified, and the company has not disclosed production volumes or yields. The sell-off reflects investor fears about what the new design could do to pricing power. Nothing has shipped yet.

The sell-off also reached a market already uneasy about how the artificial intelligence (AI) buildout is financed. ZeroHedge reported that Hock Tan, the chief executive of Broadcom, said on Monday that heavy investment in AI is being funded by credit extended across the chip supply chain, including credit his own company provides to customers, a dynamic he [compared to a casino financing its own gamblers](https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/hock-tan-warns-ai-investors-are-gambling-casino-whose-chips-his-own-credit-paying). The outlet said that credit, not just underlying demand, is paying for much of the spending Tan described.

## What this means

The exposure runs through memory pricing. Korean and Taiwanese memory makers earn high margins selling server DRAM into AI data centers. A credible low-cost Chinese supplier caps those margins even before it ships at scale, because it gives buyers more bargaining power. The Korean and Taiwanese stock indices and the Korean won are directly exposed, while Chinese chip-equipment buyers and AI server builders stand to gain from cheaper memory. The market had already priced in a strong memory cycle. The new element is the possibility that China has taken a cost lead in one product line despite United States export controls. The closest precedent is Huawei's Mate 60 Pro phone in August 2023, which used a domestically made advanced chip, after which Washington tightened export controls within about six weeks. The likelier outcome is pressure in Washington within weeks for new restrictions on CXMT or the equipment it uses, while Korean memory shares stay volatile until CXMT demonstrates real production volumes. This forecast would be proven wrong if independent teardown analysis or customer data show the 4F² chips slipping past year-end or yielding poorly.

## What to watch

- Whether the US Commerce Department adds CXMT or its equipment suppliers to export-control lists: that would show Washington treats the advance as a strategic threat.
- Foreign investor flows in Seoul over the next week: continued net selling of Samsung and SK Hynix would mean investors are revaluing the whole Korean AI trade, not reacting to a single day's headline.
- Server memory contract prices in the next monthly survey: a drop would show that Chinese competition is already reaching buyers' price negotiations.
