# Fed's Williams says no rate increases should be needed in 2027, against futures pricing, before US inflation data

Bitcoin rose about 1.5%, approaching $84,000, as the dollar weakened. Gold fell 0.4% to about $4,157 an ounce, and silver lost nearly 2%.

John Williams, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and vice chair of the rate-setting committee, said he expects one more rate increase this year and none in 2027, [FXStreet reported](https://www.fxstreet.com/news/feds-williams-sees-one-final-2026-rate-hike-none-in-2027-202610131821). [CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/13/john-williams-fed-rate-hikes-2027.html) reported that this view runs counter to trader positioning, which prices in at least one more increase in 2027.

In September the Fed unanimously raised its target range by a quarter point to 3.75% to 4.00%. It was the Fed's first increase since 2023, [according to Trading Economics](https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/interest-rate/news/590264). At that meeting, 16 of 18 policymakers indicated at least one more increase before the end of 2026. Officials also said they do not expect inflation to return to target until 2029, [InvestingLive reported](https://investinglive.com/central-banks/fed-hikes-hints-at-more-7-takeaways-from-the-september-fomc/).

The next test is September consumer price data. [OilPrice](https://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-General/Wall-Street-Sees-Inflation-Easing-Even-With-Oil-Above-90.html) reported that the release is due Wednesday and that economists expect the main inflation measures to have kept moderating despite oil above $90. [CoinDesk](https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/10/14/bitcoin-climbs-toward-usd84-000-after-fed-s-williams-sees-no-rate-hikes-in-2027) described the data as due Thursday, so the timing differs between outlets. A forecast cited by [Crypto Times](https://www.cryptotimes.io/2026/10/14/us-cpi-data-inflation-may-hit-3-7-what-to-expect-for-bitcoin/) puts annual headline inflation at 3.7%. In its morning market report, Israel's [Globes](https://www.globes.co.il/news/article.aspx?did=1001559424#utm_source=RSS) wrote that investors are waiting "anxiously" for the figure. It said Asian markets were trading higher, Wall Street chip stocks had stayed under pressure overnight, US futures were up, and one investment house was advising clients to shift money from stocks into bonds.

Assets moved in different directions. Bitcoin rose 1.5% to nearly $83,900 after Williams spoke, [CoinDesk reported](https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/10/14/bitcoin-climbs-toward-usd84-000-after-fed-s-williams-sees-no-rate-hikes-in-2027). The privacy token ZEC led gains among major tokens, and Korean chipmakers ended a five-session losing streak. Precious metals moved the other way. Gold fell 0.36% to $4,156.83 an ounce on Tuesday, and silver fell 1.89% to $59.16, [according to Trading Economics](https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/gold) [data](https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/silver).

From a sound-money perspective, the key figure is the gap between the policy rate and inflation. If headline inflation lands near the 3.7% forecast, a policy rate of 3.75% to 4.00% provides a real return of roughly zero. Under Williams' guidance, the Fed would tolerate inflation above target into 2029 rather than raise the real cost of credit.

## What this means

Williams lowered the expected peak for US interest rates, and the main transmission channel is the dollar. A lower expected peak weakens the dollar and helps liquidity-sensitive assets, which is why bitcoin moved with Asian equities rather than with gold on the same day. The exposed parties are dollar holders, whose real return is near zero at this policy rate, and holders of long-duration bonds. A higher tolerance for inflation without a matching rise in real rates typically shows up at the long end of the bond market. The market price that conflicts with Williams is the 2027 rate increase that futures still carry. If September consumer prices show core inflation firming, traders will keep pricing that increase, and his guidance will lose credibility within weeks. If core inflation moderates instead, expect the 2027 increase to fade from pricing, the dollar to soften, and bitcoin to keep tracking equities, which argues against the view that bitcoin trades as a hedge like gold rather than for it. A core reading strong enough to make other voting members talk about two more increases would prove the softer outlook wrong.

## What to watch

- The month-on-month change in core consumer prices. A firm reading would put a 2027 rate increase back into futures pricing regardless of Williams' comments.
- Whether other voting members of the rate-setting committee repeat Williams' "no hikes in 2027" line in public remarks this week. One official's view is not committee guidance.
- Whether bitcoin and gold keep moving in opposite directions on Fed news. Continued divergence would confirm that bitcoin trades as a liquidity-sensitive asset rather than as a store of value like gold.
