# CoreWeave's default insurance reaches distress levels as the AI debt sell-off spreads to South Korea's Kospi

Seven straight losing sessions removed about 20% of the Seoul index's value, while US 10-year Treasury yields fell 10.5 basis points to 5.085% as investors sold technology shares and bought defensive ones.

Bond investors are repricing the debt that pays for artificial-intelligence (AI) data centers, and CoreWeave is the borrower at the center of the sell-off. The cloud company loses money and carries about $50 billion of debt. It has become the main example of concern that [the data-center boom is being funded by credit](https://www.japantimes.co.jp/business/2026/10/16/companies/coreweave-ai-boom-debt/), The Japan Times reported. Its shares [fell as much as 16% on Wednesday](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/14/coreweave-stock-bond-yields-ai-debt.html) after yields on its bonds approached 15%. They lost another 6% before Thursday's open, and the yield on its April-issued bonds due 2031 [passed 16%](https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/investing/2026/10/15/coreweave-shares-bonds-slide-further-as-ai-debt-fears-mount/).

The derivatives market prices a real chance of default. The cost of insuring CoreWeave's debt against default (credit default swaps) rose to about 1,000 basis points. CNBC calculated that this level [implies a nearly 63% chance of default within five years](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/15/coreweave-credit-default-swaps-hit-distress-levels-as-investors-sour-on-ai-debt.html), up from about 30% a year ago. The company's chief executive replied that a contracted backlog of nearly $104 billion ["more than supports all of our debt obligations"](https://thecryptobasic.com/2026/10/15/coreweave-stock-falls-another-6-as-bond-yields-top-15-despite-ceo-reassurance/). Bondholders do not yet accept that answer, because a backlog is a promise of future revenue and the coupons are due now.

The selling has gone beyond one company. The Financial Times reports that [investors are dumping data-center bonds and that abandoned listings are piling up](https://www.ft.com/content/6a1ecb1a-a998-4cbb-be54-22df550a66ee?syn-25a6b1a6=1). Oracle and other specialist AI cloud providers [also fell on Wednesday](https://siliconangle.com/2026/10/14/shares-of-oracle-neoclouds-drop-on-coreweave-debt-concerns/). Lenders are still separating stronger borrowers from weaker ones. In June, Kroll Bond Rating Agency gave Anthropic [its highest junk rating](https://www.ft.com/content/5a310aee-f555-4266-874c-b1b4db20186d?syn-25a6b1a6=1), a judgment the FT says puts the AI developer in line for investment-grade status.

South Korea, where the AI trade is concentrated in memory-chip makers, fell the most among national markets. The Kospi dropped 7.57% on Thursday to 5,554.22, [a level the index had not closed at since April 7](https://sundayguardianlive.com/business/korea-stock-market-krx-today-october-16-why-is-the-korean-stock-market-up-today-kospi-rebounds-nearly-3-kosdaq-jumps-318-after-seven-day-losing-streak-top-gainers-losers-306647/). The drop ended a seven-session decline that removed about 20% of the index's value. On Friday morning the index rose more than 2%, and Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix [gained after US bond yields fell](https://www.kedglobal.com/korean-stock-market/newsView/ked202610160001). Foreign investors kept selling into the rebound. CoinDesk noted that Seoul's chipmakers [recovered from their worst close since April](https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/10/16/bitcoin-buyers-snap-up-a-brief-drop-below-usd80-000-as-asian-stocks-rebound).

In New York on Thursday, the S&P 500 rose 0.3% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.1%. The Nasdaq Composite [ended slightly higher after falling more than 1% earlier](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/live/stock-market-today-dow-sp-500-rise-nasdaq-trims-losses-as-treasury-yields-sink-153611834.html). The 10-year Treasury yield closed at 5.085% and the 30-year yield at 5.426%. In the Austrian account of the business cycle, the correction begins when long-lived projects that were financed on the assumption of cheap credit meet interest rates that do not fall. A cloud provider that pays close to 10% coupons while the risk-free long rate sits above 5% needs returns well above both rates for its spending to pay off. The bond market now doubts that CoreWeave will earn them.

## What this means

The channel is refinancing cost. CoreWeave and similar leveraged data-center builders depend on rolling over debt that is secured on graphics processors and customer contracts. When their yields rise into the mid-teens, new projects stop and existing ones need more equity. The exposed groups are high-yield and private-credit lenders, the equipment suppliers whose order books depend on these buyers, and AI-heavy equity markets such as South Korea, which have little else in the index to offset losses in chips. The market has already priced CoreWeave as distressed. What is new is that the stress reached a national index and pushed investors out of technology even on a day when Treasury yields fell. The consensus treats this as a problem specific to one weak balance sheet. The desk's view is that the underlying problem is the level of long-term rates, which affects every debt-financed builder. The closest precedent is the telecom build-out of 1998 to 2002, when carriers borrowed to lay fiber ahead of demand. Several defaulted, while the infrastructure itself was later bought cheaply and used. The likelier outcome over the next one to three months is more cancelled listings, delayed data-center projects and wider spreads for the second tier of AI borrowers, while the cash-rich platform companies and the highest-rated AI labs keep access to credit. That outcome depends on the 10-year yield staying near or above 5%. It would be proved wrong if CoreWeave raises new debt at yields well below where its current bonds trade, which would show that lenders accept the backlog as collateral.

## What to watch

- Whether CoreWeave or another specialist AI cloud provider tries to issue new bonds or loans, and at what yield. A successful deal would show the market is still open to them, and a pulled deal would show it is closed.
- Daily foreign selling in Seoul. A stop in foreign selling would suggest the Kospi decline was forced deleveraging, while continued outflows would show global funds cutting their exposure to the AI chip trade.
- The 10-year Treasury yield. A sustained drop would ease refinancing pressure across the sector, and a return higher would put more borrowers in CoreWeave's position.
