# Gold trades near $4,180 and silver near $58 after Warsh lowers expectations of an October Fed hike

Futures-implied odds of a hike at the October 28 meeting fell to about 16% after the Fed chair's remarks, and bitcoin rose 1.3% to about $82,500, moving with Nasdaq futures rather than with gold and silver.

Gold [edged higher in early Asian trading](https://m.economictimes.com/markets/commodities/news/gold-edges-higher-as-investors-assess-fed-rate-hike-odds/articleshow/135037837.cms) on Monday. Investors were weighing remarks by Kevin Warsh, the chair of the Federal Reserve, on the economy and rising inflation. Spot gold was [up 0.3% at $4,175.60 an ounce](https://www.goodreturns.in/news/gold-rates-silver-rates-today-19-10-2026-live-spot-gold-silver-price-mcx-gold-24k-22k-18k-gold-price-1542397.html) at 8:29 a.m. India time, and other quotes put it [near $4,183](https://www.mitrade.com/insights/commodity-analysis/gold/gold-fed-pause-odds-crude-rally). Silver rose 74 cents to [$58.48](https://www.kitco.com/charts/silver). At those prices one ounce of gold buys about 71 ounces of silver.

The rates backdrop changed on Friday. Speaking at an International Monetary Fund (IMF) event in Bangkok, Warsh said he was not signaling a decision. Markets still read his remarks as a sign the Fed would pause, and the futures-implied probability of an October hike [fell from 27.7% to 16.1%](https://www.benzinga.com/markets/prediction-markets/26/10/62408879/fed-rate-hike-odds-warsh-ai). Earlier in the week, a hot inflation report had pushed those odds from 21% to 54%. The dollar index [fell toward 101.69](https://www.actionforex.com/action-insight/market-overview/657759-dollar-extends-slide-as-fed-warsh-refuses-to-revive-october-hike-bets/) and gave back its entire post-report gain. The Fed raised rates by a quarter point in September, and the [10-year Treasury yield climbed back to 5%](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/09/16/treasury-yield-bond-market-fed-decision.html) after that decision.

Bitcoin traded in line with equities. It rose to about [$82,500, up 1.3% over 24 hours](https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/10/19/bitcoin-korea-s-kospi-and-nasdaq-futures-rally-as-china-gdp-beats-estimates), as South Korea's Kospi and Nasdaq futures gained on China's growth beat and lower oil prices. Israel's Globes described [mixed trading across Asia and a modest recovery in New York futures](https://www.globes.co.il/news/article.aspx?did=1001559964#utm_source=RSS) ahead of a heavy earnings week, with oil falling back from a five-month high.

Gold and interest rates are moving in opposite directions from what the standard relationship would predict. Bond yields near 5% and a Fed that raised rates in September would normally weigh on gold, since it pays no yield of its own. Instead, gold has held above $4,100. That gap suggests buyers doubt the Fed will keep real interest rates (rates after inflation) positive for long if inflation keeps surprising to the upside.

## What this means

The main channel is real rates. A Fed that pauses while inflation runs hot lowers real yields, which helps gold and silver and weakens the dollar. Holders of long-dated Treasuries carry the inflation risk the Fed is choosing not to fight harder. The market has already priced the pause through the fall in hike odds and the dollar's retreat. What it has priced less is the chance that Warsh is keeping his options open, which a CNBC analysis argued could still produce a surprise on October 28. Bitcoin's 1.3% gain alongside Nasdaq futures, rather than alongside gold, again shows it trading as a liquidity-sensitive risk asset. The likelier outcome over the next few weeks is that gold holds its range while inflation data stay hot and the Fed holds. This depends on the September inflation trend continuing into the next release. The desk's read is wrong if the Fed hikes on October 28, which would lift the dollar and real yields and push both metals and bitcoin lower.

## What to watch

- The Fed's October 28 decision and Warsh's press conference. A hike after Friday's remarks would show the Fed is willing to surprise markets on inflation, and it would hit non-yielding assets first.
- The gold-to-silver ratio, now about 71. If silver keeps gaining on gold, buyers are treating the move as an industrial and monetary rally, not a pure flight to safety.
- Bitcoin on days when the Nasdaq falls and gold rises. Continued co-movement with equities would confirm that bitcoin does not behave as a hedge for monetary assets.
