# Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro trade attacks in their first run-off debate a week before a near-tied vote

Quaest, Datafolha and CNT/MDA polls show the senator ahead by one to two points, Vox Brasil puts Lula ahead 51 to 49, and Folha reports that investors are already trimming Latin American election trades.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, [attacked each other repeatedly](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/19/lula-and-bolsonaro-spar-in-brazils-fiery-first-presidential-run-off-debate) in their first face-to-face debate on Sunday, a week before the October 25 run-off. The South China Morning Post described a [contentious exchange](https://www.scmp.com/news/world/americas/article/3371343/lula-and-bolsonaro-trade-barbs-fiery-brazil-run-debate?utm_source=rss_feed) and noted that the senator led in the polls going into the debate. InfoMoney's account lists [public security, the economy, health, the working week and foreign policy](https://www.infomoney.com.br/politica/lula-x-flavio-veja-as-principais-frases-do-primeiro-debate-do-2o-turno/) as the main subjects. After the broadcast, police sent a bomb squad to check a [suspicious object near the station](https://www.infomoney.com.br/politica/suspeita-de-bomba-mobiliza-esquadrao-antibomba-apos-debate-entre-lula-e-flavio/). Both candidates had already left.

The race is close. Flávio Bolsonaro won the first round [47% to 45%](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_Brazilian_general_election). Since then, Quaest has shown him [ahead 46% to 44%](https://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2026-10-14/flavio-bolsonaro-slightly-leads-lula-in-brazil-runoff-quaest-poll-shows), Datafolha 47% to 45%, and CNT/MDA on Sunday [46.8% to 45.9%](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/16/latest-poll-shows-bolsonaro-maintaining-edge-over-lula-in-brazil-run-off). A Vox Brasil poll puts [Lula ahead 51% to 49% of valid votes](https://www.riotimesonline.com/vox-brasil-poll-lula-51-flavio-49-runoff-2026), a statistical tie given the margins involved. Brazilian right-wing figures have started [citing Polymarket odds as a better guide than polls](https://www.batimes.com.ar/news/latin-america/brazils-right-embraces-election-betting-odds-amid-polls-scepticism.phtml).

The working week is a fiscal question as well as a campaign question. A constitutional amendment to end the six-day working week (the "6x1" schedule) is [moving through the Senate](https://www.dgabc.com.br/Noticia/4351441/pec-da-escala-6x1-avanca-no-senado-e-entra-na-disputa-do-2-turno), and both camps are negotiating in Congress during the campaign.

Folha's markets desk reports a broader shift. The strong rallies in equities and currencies that followed right-wing election wins across Latin America are now losing momentum. New governments are running into fiscal reality, and investors are weighing whether to keep buying or to take profits.

## What this means

The real and Brazil's local-currency bonds will trade on fiscal arithmetic, not on who wins. A Flávio Bolsonaro win is widely expected to produce a rally, but Folha's reporting on post-election fatigue in neighboring markets suggests that rally may already be partly priced and may not last if Congress resists spending cuts. A Lula win would reprice the long end of local yields higher, because markets would expect continued spending pressure, including from the working-week amendment. Holders of Brazilian equities and of the real are most exposed, and so are foreign investors in Brazilian carry trades. The precedent is Argentina after Javier Milei's 2023 win. Markets rallied hard, then traded on each congressional vote and each monthly fiscal figure. The likelier outcome in either case is a sharp move in the real in the days after October 25, followed within weeks by a repricing based on the winner's first budget signals and coalition votes in Congress. The desk's read is wrong if the winner secures a clear congressional majority for a fiscal rule early, which would make the first move last.

## What to watch

- The real and Brazil's long-dated local bond yields on the Monday after the October 25 vote. The size of the first move will show how much of the result markets had already priced.
- The Senate vote on the working-week amendment. Passage would add labor costs that the next government's fiscal plan must cover.
- Whether the losing candidate accepts the result quickly. A disputed outcome would add a political-risk premium to Brazilian assets beyond any fiscal question.
