Russian air defenses shot down 145 drones over St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region in one night, Governor Alexander Drozdenko said, [Ostorozhno Novosti reported](https://t.me/ostorozhno_novosti/56235) in Russian. The Vostochnaya substation was damaged, so the town of Yanino switched to backup power and a boiler house was started. Local news site [Fontanka reported](https://www.fontanka.ru/2026/10/18/76708960/) that the 330-kilovolt substation's damage was mainly to wiring. Fontanka said one person died and 10 were injured, seven of whom were hospitalized, including five children.

The drones struck companies that are part of Russia's ordinary civilian economy. [Kommersant reported](https://www.kommersant.ru/doc/9041374) damage to a data center belonging to VK, the country's largest social-media group, a logistics center of the online retailer Ozon, and an oil terminal. Independent outlet [Agentstvo](https://www.agents.media/ukraina-nanesla-po-sankt-peterburgu-krupnejshij-vozdushnyj-udar-s-nachala-vojny/) described the attack as Ukraine's largest air strike on St. Petersburg since the war began, and [reported about 1,000 cancelled flights](https://agentstvo.substack.com/p/1000) at Moscow's airports during the same wave of attacks. Ukrainian officials did not comment on the specific targets in the coverage reviewed.

The attacks continued at a lower level. State news agency [RIA Novosti reported](https://ria.ru/20261020/bpla-2125525162.html) on Tuesday that air defenses downed two drones over the Kaluga region in the previous 24 hours. Russian outlets of every editorial line, state, business and independent, reported the St. Petersburg damage. Few Russian events get that kind of agreement across outlets, which makes the damage reports more reliable than most wartime claims.

## What this means

Ukraine has added Russia's digital and retail logistics infrastructure, in its second city, to a target list that until recently focused on refineries. The cost falls on Russian corporate balance sheets and insurers rather than on the military budget. Data-center operators, e-commerce warehouses and airports in the northwest now need air defense, redundancy and coverage they did not account for a year ago. Strikes on Russian refineries are not new. Hits on a VK server site and an Ozon warehouse are, because they raise the cost of doing business across the economy. The 2024 and 2025 refinery campaign is the precedent. It led Moscow to impose repeated gasoline export bans within months and to move air-defense batteries away from the front. The desk's read is that Russia will answer with heavier strikes on Ukraine's power grid within weeks as the heating season starts, and that Moscow will redeploy air defense to the northwest, which will weaken coverage elsewhere. A mutual pause on strikes against energy infrastructure, similar to the one attempted in March 2025, emerging from the Trump-Putin talks would prove this wrong and would be the first concrete result of that diplomatic channel.

## What to watch

- Russian strikes on Ukrainian power plants and substations in the coming days. Their scale will show whether Moscow answers attacks on its cities with attacks on the Ukrainian grid.
- Disruption at Moscow and St. Petersburg airports. Repeated closures raise costs for Russian airlines and businesses far from the front.
- Any proposal for a moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure in US-Russia talks. It would be the first sign that the diplomatic channel can limit the war on Russian territory.
