Dollar futures against the real jumped about 10% on Sunday evening, a Tokyo-listed Brazil fund fell more than 11% at the open, and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro said he will try to have the vote annulled.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won Sunday's runoff with [51.8% of valid votes against 48.2%](https://www.gurufocus.com/news/9141532/brazils-market-faces-turmoil-after-lulas-election-victory) for Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. The state news agency [Agência Brasil](https://agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br/politica/noticia/2026-10/flavio-nao-reconhece-vitoria-de-lula-e-tentara-anulacao-do-pleito) put Lula's margin at more than 4.4 million votes. Investors had not positioned for this outcome. Bolsonaro finished first in the first round, and on election eve prediction markets gave him [roughly an 80% chance of winning](https://www.ambito.com/economia/balotaje-brasil-2026-las-apuestas-dan-un-80-probabilidades-triunfo-flavio-bolsonaro-lula-da-silva-n6337654), according to Argentina's Ámbito.

Prices moved before Brazil's own markets opened. Dollar futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange [rose about 10% against the real](https://www.gurufocus.com/news/9141532/brazils-market-faces-turmoil-after-lulas-election-victory) on Sunday evening. A Tokyo-listed exchange-traded fund (ETF) that tracks the Ibovespa fell more than 11% at the start of Monday trading in Japan, and [other reports put the drop at up to 16%](https://investinglive.com/news/investinglive-asia-pacific-market-news-brazil-etf-slumps-on-lula-win). [Investing.com reported](https://www.investing.com/news/economy-news/investors-expect-markets-to-unwind-as-brazils-lula-reelected-4971377) that investors expected the trades built around a Bolsonaro victory to unwind. In a Citigroup survey of 73 investors, most expected a Lula win to weaken the real by 5% or more and to push swap rates up by more than a full percentage point. Traders were already exiting bets on rate cuts they had placed after the first round. If the Ibovespa falls 10% in a session, it triggers a 30-minute trading halt. The brokerage Monte Bravo had estimated an 11% fall in the first hour.

Bolsonaro said on Sunday night that he [does not recognize the result and will seek its annulment](https://agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br/politica/noticia/2026-10/flavio-nao-reconhece-vitoria-de-lula-e-tentara-anulacao-do-pleito). He argues that a Supreme Federal Court justice illegally extended voting by two hours. Congress responded faster than the courts. Senate President Davi Alcolumbre and Chamber of Deputies President Hugo Motta [congratulated Lula, called for reconciliation, and said he must govern for all Brazilians](https://www.infomoney.com.br/politica/alcolumbre-e-motta-oferecem-apoio-a-lula-e-pedem-uniao-do-pais-apos-eleicao/), InfoMoney reported. Their statements leave Bolsonaro's challenge without institutional backing for now.

The business community wants fiscal commitments in return. Economists, chief executives and sector leaders interviewed by [Folha de S.Paulo](https://www1.folha.uol.com.br/mercado/2026/10/economistas-ceos-e-lideres-setoriais-cobram-ajuste-fiscal-e-previsibilidade-no-4o-mandato-de-lula.shtml) asked for fiscal adjustment, stable rules, predictable decisions and legal certainty. They said these would determine how much private investment returns during the fourth term. Lula, 80, spent heavily on social programs in earlier terms, and markets have priced that record into the real for years.

## What this means

Two groups lose first: holders of Brazilian equities and the real who bought the "Bolsonaro trade," and receivers in local interest-rate swaps who expected faster cuts in the Selic, Brazil's benchmark rate. Higher swap rates raise the government's own borrowing costs, which makes fiscal arithmetic the variable markets will focus on, more than the contested result itself. That fits the desk's working thesis that fiscal credibility, not the identity of the winner, sets emerging-market currency prices. The closest precedent is 2002. The real fell sharply before Lula's first term, then recovered within months after he appointed an orthodox finance team and kept primary surpluses. The consensus is pricing Lula 2026 as a spender. It may underestimate how much a hostile Congress, whose leaders accepted the result immediately, will constrain him. The likelier outcome is that the real and long-dated swap rates stay under pressure for weeks, until Lula names his economic team and states a spending framework. A credible fiscal anchor would allow a partial recovery within months. If Lula instead signals more spending outside the fiscal rule, this forward read is wrong, and the selloff extends into sovereign credit spreads.

## What to watch

- Who Lula names as finance minister and whether that person commits publicly to the existing fiscal framework. This is the clearest signal of whether the selloff will reverse.
- Whether the Superior Electoral Court or the Supreme Federal Court takes up Bolsonaro's annulment claim at all. A quick dismissal removes the institutional-risk premium, while a drawn-out case keeps it priced in.
- Long-dated Brazilian swap rates compared with the real. If swap rates rise further while the currency stabilizes, markets are pricing fiscal risk rather than a one-day positioning unwind.
