Brent crude topped $116.50 a barrel on Wednesday on the reports, then eased toward $113 on Thursday as Gulf diplomacy with Tehran continued.

United States officials have told regional allies that a new round of military action against Iran could last several days, according to Associated Press reporting [carried by The Hindu](https://www.thehindu.com/news/international/us-warns-allies-to-prepare-for-possible-iran-strikes-retaliation-after-elections-say-sources/article71638851.ece). The sources said regional officials expect Iran and its allied armed groups to retaliate, which could extend the fight beyond what Washington plans. Russia's [Kommersant](https://www.kommersant.ru/doc/9063297), citing the same AP report, said the strikes could resume after the US midterm elections on November 3.

The warning matches earlier reporting. On October 22, [the Times of Israel](https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog-october-22-2026/) cited officials as saying that the United States and Israel had planned a "short but intensive operation" after the midterms. Possible targets included Iranian energy sites, nuclear facilities and missile and drone stockpiles. Officials also said President Donald Trump was reluctant to restart major combat and could be influenced by the election result. Trump himself denied reports that negotiations with Tehran had resumed and said recent contacts concerned only humanitarian aid and medicine supplies, [Russia's BFM.ru reported](https://www.bfm.ru/news/622285).

Oil moved on each report. Brent futures rose above $116.50 early on Wednesday after a Wall Street Journal report that the administration was preparing a brief campaign after the vote, [ZeroHedge noted](https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/day-after-midterms-diplomacy-or-another-epic-fury). By Thursday, crude had fallen to about $113 as diplomatic talks outweighed concern about attacks on infrastructure, [India's Economic Times reported](https://m.economictimes.com/markets/commodities/news/oil-price-today-october-29-crude-oil-dips-to-113-as-diplomatic-talks-outweigh-infra-attacks-can-oil-fall-further/articleshow/135286659.cms). Earlier in the month, [Trading Economics reported](https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/brent-crude-oil/news/594684) that Iran had tightened its control over traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

Each actor has something to gain from these disclosures. A public timetable gives Washington leverage over Tehran while Saudi, Pakistani and Turkish envoys work on a regional framework. It also lets Gulf governments prepare their air defenses and energy facilities. Iranian state outlets in today's candidate set did not address the AP report.

## What this means

Oil is the main channel here. A strike plan aimed at Iranian energy infrastructure, combined with expected retaliation by Iran and its allies, keeps a risk premium in Brent roughly the size of this week's $10 swing. The parties exposed are importers in Europe and Asia, airlines, and Gulf producers whose facilities sit within range of Iranian missiles. The market has already priced in some action after November 3. What it has not priced in is a campaign that runs longer than "several days" because of retaliation. The closest precedent is the June 2025 strikes on Iran: crude rose sharply and then fell back within days once Iran's response stayed limited. The desk's read is that Brent will stay above $100 through the election week and will spike if strikes begin. The premium would then fade within weeks only if Iran's response avoids Gulf export facilities and shipping. Sustained attacks on Hormuz traffic or on Saudi or Emirati infrastructure would prove that wrong and push crude higher for months.

## What to watch

- Statements from the White House or Pentagon in the days after November 3. A stated timetable would turn these reports into a schedule that markets can price.
- Iranian official responses through IRNA or Tasnim. A specific threat against Gulf export terminals would widen the conflict beyond the scenario Washington described to its allies.
- Tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. A fall in transits would show Iran using its main point of leverage over energy markets.
