# Gold Falls to a One-Year Low Below $3,900 and Silver Breaks $50 as Markets Price a Fed Rate Increase

Silver lost nearly 9% this week and bitcoin traded near $77,000, so all three assets fell together as investors sold holdings to raise cash.

Gold fell [$124.03, or 3.08%, to $3,897.48 an ounce](https://www.usagold.com/daily-precious-metals-market-report-october-30-2026/) on Friday. According to [Kitco](https://www.kitco.com/news/article/2026-10-30/gold-prices-plunge-one-year-low-below-3900-higher-oil-prices-fuel-fears), that was its lowest price since October 6, 2025. Silver fell 5.90% to $49.09, [below $50 for the first time in nearly a year](https://www.mining.com/gold-price-slumps-to-one-year-low-silver-price-breaks-50-as-mining-stocks-tank/). Silver lost nearly 9% over the week, its worst week since early June. Platinum and palladium fell 7% to 9%, and gold fell about 2% over the week.

The Russian financial channel [Bankrollo summarized the week](https://t.me/bankrollo/69288) as big-tech shares in China and the United States collapsing, gold and silver falling, Binance being hacked, and what it called a state coup in Poland. Market reports attribute Friday's sell-off in metals to two causes. The first was [liquidation that followed the technology sell-off](https://www.kitco.com/news/article/2026-10-30/wall-street-abandons-ship-after-gold-sinks-below-3900oz-main-street) as funds raised cash. The second was rising odds of a Federal Reserve rate increase in December. Kitco also reported that higher oil prices fed fears of more monetary tightening.

Bitcoin moved with the other assets. [Globes reported](https://www.globes.co.il/news/article.aspx?did=1001561446#utm_source=RSS) that it fell below $78,000 on Friday. It traded near [$77,367 on Saturday](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/article/bitcoin-drops-to-76000-as-binance-hack-spooks-investors-tether-circle-freeze-assets-083406383.html), down about 4% on the week, with most of the loss coming after the Binance hack on October 29. On Friday, bitcoin fell less than the metals did.

The dollar gained against several currencies during the sell-off. It rose above 3.14 Israeli shekels and recorded its [largest weekly gain against the Brazilian real since 2008](https://agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br/economia/noticia/2026-10/dolar-fecha-r-544-e-registra-maior-alta-semanal-desde-2008).

## What this means

The mechanism is real yields and margin liquidity. With the 10-year Treasury near 4.94% and a December hike priced, holding a non-yielding metal costs more, and leveraged funds that lost money on tech stocks sold whatever had liquid gains, which included gold and silver. This week's evidence cuts against the desk's dedollarization thesis in the short run, because the dollar strengthened during stress. It does not refute it, because central-bank gold buying is a multi-year allocation and does not respond to weekly margin calls. The precedent is late 2008 and March 2020, when gold fell during the scramble for dollars and then rose to new highs once central banks eased. The desk's read is that metals stay under pressure until the December Fed meeting if hike odds stay high, and that the floor will come when the Fed signals that the tightening cycle is ending or when financial stress forces a pause. A gold recovery above $4,000 before December without any change in Fed pricing would show that official-sector buying is now absorbing liquidation selling.

## What to watch

- Weekly holdings of gold exchange-traded funds. Continued outflows would show Western investors are still selling, while stable holdings would point to Asian and central-bank demand absorbing the supply.
- The gap between gold prices in Shanghai and London. A widening Shanghai premium would show Chinese buyers are absorbing the Western selling.
- Whether bitcoin falls further on the next tech sell-off day. A further fall would confirm that bitcoin trades with risk assets rather than with the metals.
