# Nvidia Puts Agent Containment Into Silicon With OpenShell and a BlueField-4 Watchdog

The Apache 2.0 runtime converts operator instructions into enforced policies before an agent starts and pairs them with an independent monitor on separate hardware.

Nvidia released the [Open Agent Safety Platform](https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/open-agent-safety-platform), a combination of open-source software and a reference system design meant to keep autonomous agents inside declared boundaries from testing through production. The Russian-language channel AI ML Big Data [summarized it](https://t.me/ai_machinelearning_big_data/11054) as an open toolkit for running autonomous agents in an isolated environment, built on OpenShell, a runtime the company has been developing for about a year, with a second optional layer of control above it.

OpenShell is the software half. [Nvidia's developer post](https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/nvidia-open-agent-safety-platform-a-reference-for-continuous-in-silicon-agent-monitoring/) describes three components: a gateway that manages sandbox lifecycles and policies, a sandbox that applies kernel-level controls over filesystem and process activity, and a supervisor attached to each sandbox that checks outbound requests against policy. The design compiles an operator's instructions into verifiable policy before the agent runs, then enforces which files, networks, tools, processes and credentials it may touch. The code is on GitHub under Apache 2.0 and supports Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode and GitHub Copilot CLI among others.

The second layer is the commercially interesting one. Nvidia pairs OpenShell running on Vera CPUs with Sentry on BlueField-4 data processing units (DPUs), so the monitor sits on hardware the agent's own process cannot reach and can quarantine activity within milliseconds. [SecurityWeek](https://www.securityweek.com/nvidia-unveils-ai-agent-safety-platform-with-hardware-based-watchdog/) describes it as a hardware-based watchdog, and [StorageReview](https://www.storagereview.com/news/nvidia-open-agent-safety-platform-openshell-sentry-bluefield-4) counts more than 100 launch partners.

Open-sourcing the runtime while putting the enforcement layer on its own DPUs is a familiar strategy. The free software defines the interface, and the part that is hard to replace runs on Nvidia silicon.

## What this means

The mechanism is where the trust boundary lives: if enforcement moves below the operating system onto a separate processor, agent isolation becomes a hardware purchase rather than a library choice, and the vendor that owns the DPU owns the audit log. Nvidia and cloud operators already standardizing on BlueField stand to gain, while software-only agent sandbox startups whose differentiation was policy enforcement in userspace are exposed. Enterprises gain a procurement answer to the question security teams keep raising about privileged agents, which is the real obstacle to production deployment, not model quality. The precedent is the way confidential computing enclaves moved key handling from software to CPU features and reshaped who sold the control plane. The likelier outcome over the next two to three quarters is that competing accelerator and cloud vendors publish their own agent-containment references and the interface fragments before it standardizes. If instead the Apache 2.0 runtime gets adopted widely without the Sentry layer, the hardware tie will have failed and containment stays a software market.

## What to watch

- Whether OpenShell sees adoption without BlueField-4, the test of whether the hardware watchdog is essential or optional.
- Whether AMD, cloud providers or security vendors answer with their own agent containment reference designs, which would signal a standards fight over the agent-to-host boundary.
- Whether enterprise buyers start naming runtime isolation in agent procurement requirements, the clearest sign this moves from announcement to budget.
