# Nvidia and Microsoft Open Preorders for RTX Spark Laptops With Up to 128 GB of Unified Memory for Local Agents

Microsoft also made Execution Containers generally available, so Windows itself now enforces what files and network access a background agent can use.

At a Microsoft event in San Francisco on October 7, [Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella](https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/local-ai-rtx-spark-microsoft-windows-event/) described hardware and software the two companies are building together so that AI agents run on Windows PCs. Sriram Krishnan, a former senior White House adviser on AI policy, [hosted their fireside chat](https://www.unite.ai/nvidia-and-microsoft-bring-rtx-spark-laptops-ai-agents-to-windows-pcs/). Nvidia opened preorders for RTX Spark laptops. RTX Spark is a single package that combines an Arm-based Grace CPU with up to 20 cores, Blackwell RTX graphics and up to 128 GB of unified memory. Nvidia rates it at up to 1 petaflop of FP4 AI performance.

The first flagship device is Microsoft's Surface Laptop Ultra. It comes in [eight configurations priced from $2,599 to $5,899](https://www.tweaktown.com/news/113971/microsoft-opens-surface-laptop-ultra-preorders-at-dollars2599-with-rtx-spark-n1x-inside/index.html), and shipments start October 16. The base model has 24 GB of memory. The 128 GB configuration costs $5,899, and the upgrade from 64 GB to 128 GB [adds $1,600](https://www.notebookcheck.net/Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-Ultra-debuts-with-RTX-Spark-128-GB-unified-memory-and-2-599-starting-price.1418420.0.html).

The software announcement matters more to developers. Microsoft made [Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC) generally available](https://www.unite.ai/nvidia-and-microsoft-bring-rtx-spark-laptops-ai-agents-to-windows-pcs/). MXC is operating-system infrastructure that lets agents run persistently in the background. Developers declare what an agent can access, such as files or the network, and Windows enforces those limits. Agent sandboxing so far has relied mostly on containers or virtual machines that each developer sets up. MXC moves capability-based permission into the operating system.

Memory capacity is the specification that determines what runs locally. With 128 GB of unified memory, a 4-bit quantized model of roughly 100 billion parameters fits with room left for the KV cache. With 24 GB, the base configuration is limited to small models. The petaflop figure is Nvidia's own number at FP4 and has not been independently measured. Real throughput will depend on memory bandwidth, which the coverage reviewed does not state.

## What this means

Nvidia is entering the Windows laptop CPU market with an Arm design, which exposes Intel and AMD's x86 PC business and Qualcomm's Snapdragon X line, because Microsoft is co-marketing the product and building OS features around it. For Nvidia, the PC adds a client endpoint to its data-center CUDA stack, so developers can build on the same software locally and in the cloud. MXC is the more durable change. If Windows enforces agent permissions, then local agents become something enterprise IT can approve, which removes a main objection to running agents on employee machines. The precedent is Apple's M-series transition, which moved high-end developer laptops to unified-memory Arm machines within about two years. The pricing, from $2,599 to $5,899, limits this to developers and professionals for now. The likelier outcome is that within months OEMs announce lower-priced RTX Spark designs and local inference frameworks add first-class MXC support. The condition is that the 24 GB and 32 GB configurations sell, because those decide whether this reaches a mass market. Poor x86 software compatibility on the Arm CPU, as seen with early Windows-on-Arm devices, would slow adoption and prove this forecast wrong.

## What to watch

- Independent memory-bandwidth and tokens-per-second measurements on the 128 GB Surface Laptop Ultra. These decide whether the device competes with Apple's high-memory Macs for local model work.
- Whether Dell, HP or Lenovo announce RTX Spark machines below $2,000. That price point would turn a developer product into a corporate fleet product.
- Adoption of MXC by agent frameworks and coding tools. Use by those tools would make Windows permission enforcement a standard part of the agent stack.
