# Zcash weighs freezing its oldest shielded pool as developers move to cut quantum exposure in cross-chain swaps

Zcash decides on Oct. 20 whether its upgrade goes ahead on Nov. 5, and the plan would leave about 23,000 ZEC in the Sprout pool unspendable even with intact keys. A separate client team wants a fresh key for every NEAR Intents swap so that one public refund address cannot expose a user's wider history.

Zcash is about to set a precedent that other chains will study. Its next hard fork, Network Upgrade 7 (NU7), would [stop accepting the older transaction format needed to spend from the Sprout shielded pool](https://cointelegraph.com/news/zcash-nu7-upgrade-sprout-funds-unspendable). This is the change specified in Zcash Improvement Proposal (ZIP) 2003. Any ZEC still in Sprout when the upgrade activates would stay issued but [could not be moved, even by a holder whose private keys are intact](https://cryptoslate.com/zcashs-planned-sprout-freeze-would-leave-private-keys-unable-to-move-funds/).

Sprout launched with Zcash in 2016 and was later closed to new deposits. It still holds [roughly 23,000 ZEC](https://cointelegraph.com/news/zcash-nu7-upgrade-sprout-funds-unspendable). The proposal does not burn those coins. It leaves open a future route to restore access, but it also warns holders that they may never be able to spend funds left behind. NU7 went live on testnet on Oct. 6, and developers plan to decide on Oct. 20 whether to proceed with [mainnet activation on Nov. 5](https://crypto.news/zcash-targets-nov-5-for-nu7-mainnet-upgrade/). CryptoSlate reports that the [mainnet decision remains pending](https://cryptoslate.com/zcashs-planned-sprout-freeze-would-leave-private-keys-unable-to-move-funds/).

The second change addresses a privacy gap at the point where Zcash connects to other chains. Zakura, the team that builds a Zcash client, wants [every swap routed through NEAR Intents to get its own key](https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2026/10/19/zcash-developers-plan-a-fix-to-keep-zec-swaps-private-from-future-quantum-computers). NEAR Intents is a cross-chain routing service in which users state a trade and third parties carry it out. Today a swap can leave a Zcash refund address on NEAR's public ledger. CoinDesk reports that a sufficiently capable quantum computer could later use that address to expose the user's wider payment history. Shielded Zcash transactions hide amounts and counterparties, but the addresses that touch transparent chains stay public permanently. The team treats this exposure as urgent because those addresses are already being recorded and cannot later be hidden.

NEAR Intents already has a record of security failures. On Oct. 1 the service [lost about $3.8 million, mostly in Tether, from a treasury contract on BNB Chain](https://cryptobriefing.com/near-intents-attacker-48-hours-return-funds/) after a bug in how its deposit-and-withdrawal infrastructure communicated with its smart contracts. It paused services, patched the flaw and pledged to reimburse users, and [Rekt News](https://www.rekt.news/) documented the incident. Zcash's growing reliance on this route for swaps therefore adds custody and privacy dependencies outside Zcash's own consensus.

Both changes belong to a longer program. Zcash developers have said they aim to make the network [quantum-resistant by 2027](https://decrypt.co/367250/zcash-targeting-post-quantum-crypto-milestone-by-2027). The Sprout decision is the first time that program forces a choice about coins whose owners may not be paying attention.

## What this means

The issue is property rights enforced by code. A protocol majority can now decide that a valid key no longer controls a coin, and the people exposed are dormant Sprout holders, custodians that never swept old balances, and every chain debating what to do with coins vulnerable to quantum attack. Bitcoin's version of this argument, the 2025 proposal by developer Jameson Lopp and co-authors to phase out spending from quantum-vulnerable addresses, has stalled because nobody wants to be first to make valid keys useless. Zcash is small enough to go first, and its 23,000 ZEC Sprout balance is a minor share of supply, so most of the market treats the change as a routine technical fix. That view underrates the precedent. The likelier outcome is a go-ahead on Oct. 20 and activation on Nov. 5 with Sprout spending disabled. Within months, Zcash would then become the reference case on both sides of Bitcoin's and Ethereum's legacy-coin debates. Two things would prove that read wrong: a delay of the activation decision, or an amendment to ZIP 2003 that keeps a spending path for Sprout. The per-swap key plan matters more for everyday users, because it treats cross-chain routing as the point where Zcash privacy is most exposed.

## What to watch

- The Oct. 20 activation decision and any change to ZIP 2003. A delay would show that holders or exchanges pushed back against the freeze, while activation on schedule would confirm the precedent.
- How much of the roughly 23,000 ZEC leaves the Sprout pool before Nov. 5. A large residual balance would mean real owners lose access, not just abandoned wallets.
- Whether NEAR Intents and Zcash wallets ship per-swap keys before swap volume grows further. Every refund address posted before then stays public permanently.
