Uniswap Adds Compliance-Gated Pools to Its Version 4 Protocol for Tokenized Securities
The Permissioned Pools framework checks each wallet against an issuer-controlled allowlist before every swap, keeping regulated assets on-chain while keeping them separate from open liquidity.

Uniswap Labs launched Permissioned Pools on its version 4 protocol on July 24, a framework that lets issuers of tokenized funds, equities, and other regulated assets restrict who may trade or provide liquidity while keeping the transactions on a public chain. Standard version 4 pools remain open and permissionless.
The mechanism uses a version 4 hook, a piece of code that runs at defined points in a pool's lifecycle. On every swap and liquidity action, the hook verifies the wallet against an issuer-managed allowlist before execution proceeds. Launch partners include the tokenization firms Securitize, Superstate, and Dowgo. Superstate helped design the framework for tokenized equities and funds, and Securitize ensures that assets issued through its protocol can trade within the rules.
Uniswap frames the move as addressing the standing tension between permissionless design and institutional compliance requirements, and points at a tokenized-asset market it projects between $5.5 trillion and $11 trillion by 2030. The design keeps settlement and composability on-chain while moving the gatekeeping to the token issuer.
The read is that this deliberately splits the largest decentralized exchange into an open venue and a gated one. The gated side trades some of crypto's original permissionless promise for regulatory access, and it concentrates control at the issuer, the party that decides which wallets are eligible.
What this means
Permissioned Pools give tokenized-securities issuers on-chain settlement without surrendering their legal obligation to control who holds the asset, which makes it easier for banks and asset managers to route real securities through a public automated market maker. The winners are tokenization issuers and the compliance-gated liquidity layer. The losers, if this model dominates, are the permissionless ideals that let anyone provide liquidity, because eligibility now sits with the issuer. The open question is whether regulated volume migrates to these gated pools at scale or stays inside closed institutional venues.
What to watch
- Whether tokenized-securities volume in Permissioned Pools grows meaningfully, which would show institutions actually prefer a public chain over a private one for regulated assets.
- How competing tokenization venues respond, since a contest between open and closed venues is the core of the tokenized-equities thesis.
- Whether US market-structure rules under debate accommodate or restrict issuer-gated on-chain trading.

Tokenized Equities Push Onto Public Blockchains
Over 3-6 months, exchanges and banks accelerate moving real equities on-chain — tokenized stocks with on-chain dividends and composable trading — turning the contest over open vs. closed tokenization venues into a concrete product race.
