Asia's air conditioning demand is outgrowing the grids that have to supply it

Demand for air conditioning across Asia is climbing faster than the power systems that serve it, and the South China Morning Post reports that the rising load threatens to push grids closer to failure at the same moment extreme heat degrades the equipment carrying it.

As temperatures climb, the equipment itself performs worse. Transformers and transmission lines lose capacity as ambient temperature rises, and thermal generators lose efficiency when cooling water warms. So supply falls at precisely the hour when cooling demand peaks. Air conditioners also reject heat into the street, which raises the local temperature and prompts neighbours to run their own units harder. Every additional unit installed makes the peak steeper.

The season is also lengthening and becoming less predictable. In Israel, after a weekend with above-average rainfall, forecasters expect heavy heat stress along the coast and inland plain with humidity near 65 percent during the Yom Kippur fast, Ynet reported, with Jerusalem recording 24.5 millimetres of rain days earlier. Utilities plan maintenance and fuel procurement around historical seasonal patterns, and those patterns are no longer reliable guides.

The financial consequence runs through fuel import bills. Countries that meet peak power demand with imported liquefied natural gas or coal buy on the spot market at exactly the moment everyone else in the region needs the same cargo. That combination, higher peak demand and a spot purchase at the worst possible price, is now a recurring feature of Asian energy budgets rather than an occasional shock.
