Trump's Republicans Defend Congress on Tuesday After a Reported 54 Million Early Votes

What this means

The result matters through two channels: fiscal policy and war policy. A Democratic House would control spending bills and could block new tax or tariff legislation, making additional Treasury borrowing less likely in the near term. It would have little direct power over military action, because a president can order strikes without congressional approval. Investors already expect a Democratic House, so the new information will be the size of the result and the outcome in the Senate. A Republican hold of both chambers would likely push long-dated yields higher on expectations of more deficit spending. A heavy Republican loss would make a quick deal with Iran more attractive to a president looking for a foreign-policy win. After the 2018 midterms produced a divided Congress, policy shifted toward executive action on trade. The desk's forward read: whatever the result, expect the decision on Iran to come within weeks of the vote and to depend more on whether Qatar's talks hold than on the composition of Congress. A Republican sweep followed by a quick resumption of strikes would prove that wrong and add both an oil-price premium and a deficit premium at once.
