OpenAI trains staff on spy tactics after federal prosecutors charge an engineer with hiding a recording device in an executive meeting room

The U.S. Justice Department charged Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old OpenAI engineer and Saudi national, with one count under the federal Wiretap Act, Al Jazeera reported. The count carries up to five years in prison. Prosecutors say he placed a circuit board and microphone behind a wall-mounted television in an executive conference room in San Francisco. Only executives and their assistants can book that room, and OpenAI holds executive meetings, government and partner briefings, and research and product discussions there, according to Digital Today.

AI tools produced much of the evidence. Prosecutors say Alfozan used his wife's ChatGPT account to research how to build and hide the device, Fortune reported. They also say that from late summer he asked an internal AI tool about buildings, meeting rooms and schedules. In mid-September he repeatedly asked questions such as "Where do outside partners usually meet?" The charge falls under a wiretapping statute, not an economic-espionage statute. Public reporting has not established whether he was collecting information for anyone else.

OpenAI's response goes beyond this single case. Executives have briefed staff on tactics used by state intelligence services, including romantic approaches ("honey pots") and attempts to recruit insiders, according to a Wall Street Journal report summarized by AI Weekly. Staff are told to avoid company-branded clothing outside the office, use privacy screens and wipe whiteboards. The AI ML Big Data channel, citing the Journal, reported that the briefings began before the arrest. These steps add to controls OpenAI introduced earlier, including offline machines for proprietary work, fingerprint access to some areas and a deny-by-default outbound internet policy, Maginative reported.
