Buterin Says Hegotá Will Be Ethereum's Last Familiar Fork Before a Cryptographic Rebuild

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin set out a design horizon in which the network stops behaving like a conventional blockchain. He described a path toward a "cryptography world computer" that combines consensus with zero-knowledge proofs, data availability sampling, privacy tooling and verifiable off-chain computation, so that the network can do far more work without every node repeating every calculation.

The dividing line is Hegotá, planned for 2027. Buterin argues it is likely the last upgrade whose features would still be recognizable to someone who knew Ethereum in 2015. After it come recursive versions of scalable transparent arguments of knowledge (STARKs), which are proofs that verify other proofs, automated formal verification of client code, the Lean consensus work, and quantum-safe signatures. The Ethereum Foundation has set a December 2029 deadline for quantum resistance, a target that implies five hard forks after Hegotá.

Buterin's own framing was that the change could arrive faster than expected. The main risk is execution. Validators normally catch rollup errors by re-executing transactions, but re-execution cannot detect a soundness bug in a proof system, so replacing re-execution with proofs concentrates security in code that is much harder to review.

Ethereum currently holds $53.22 billion of the $95.06 billion of value locked in decentralized finance, which is the capital that would sit behind the new verification stack.
