Pudgy Penguins' Abstract becomes the second Ethereum layer-2 network to shut down in a week
Igloo will close Abstract on December 15 after spending tens of millions of dollars on it, and Blast users have until October 26 to move funds to Ethereum mainnet.
Igloo Inc., the company behind the Pudgy Penguins brand, will shut down Abstract, its consumer-focused Ethereum layer-2 (L2) network, on December 15. Abstract is the second Ethereum L2 to announce a closure in a week, after Blast said its own network was no longer worth operating. The wind-down notice circulated on social channels on October 6.
Luca Netz, Igloo's chief executive, said the company had funded Abstract for about 18 months and lost "tens of millions of dollars" on it. The team gave its reasons as stalled growth, thin trading markets, limited institutional activity and a small decentralized finance (DeFi) market. It told users to move their assets before the closing date. It also warned that funds left on the network would become inaccessible. Netz said Igloo will now focus on Pudgy Penguins and its PENGU token.
Blast announced on October 2 that it would close its network because running the chain costs more than the chain earns. It said it saw no credible path to economic sustainability. Users must bridge assets to Ethereum mainnet by October 26. After that date, they will have to call Blast's bridge contracts on mainnet directly. Blast is first withdrawing its own assets from Lido, and user withdrawals are paused during that process. Coinbase suspended trading in the BLAST token. CryptoSlate described Blast as a $20 million network at closure.
Capital on L2s is concentrated in a few networks. L2Beat data puts total value secured (TVS) across L2s at $50.23 billion. Base Chain holds $16.01 billion and Arbitrum One holds $11.20 billion, together about 54% of the total. Both fell over the past seven days, by 1.3% and 2.4%. Of the ten largest L2s by value, only Starknet (up 9.7%) and World Chain (up 5.2%) grew over the week.
Each closure tests the rollup security model in practice. In principle, users of a rollup can withdraw to Ethereum even if the operator leaves. Blast's paused withdrawals and Abstract's warning that leftover funds will become inaccessible show how much the exit process depends on the operator's own schedule.
What this means
Application-specific and incentive-driven L2s carry fixed costs (sequencing, proving, data posting, staff), and those costs need fee revenue or a sponsor to cover them. Igloo and Blast have now both decided that the sponsor will stop paying. The exposed parties are holders of long-tail L2 tokens, the applications deployed on those chains, and any user who has not withdrawn. The broader exposure is to the view that every major brand or protocol will run its own chain. Most observers already expected thin L2s to struggle. What the market has not absorbed is that L2 operators are now actually shutting chains down, and that the exit process depends on operator schedules. Polygon's 2025 decision to retire its zkEVM rollup was an earlier case, and its users migrated to Polygon's larger networks. The likelier outcome is more closures or mergers of sponsor-funded L2s over the next three to six months, with capital moving to Base, Arbitrum and Ethereum mainnet, provided Ethereum layer-1 fees stay low enough to make running a separate chain hard to justify. This read is wrong if fee revenue on mid-sized L2s recovers, or if a new incentive program brings Blast-style deposit growth back.
Part of a tracked trend
On-Chain Capital Concentrates
As total on-chain capital contracts, value keeps concentrating on the largest chains and the applications with live demand, squeezing long-tail protocols and forcing consolidation.

Losses of tens of millions of dollars over about 18 months mean Igloo lost more than $1 million a month on average running Abstract.
