IMF sets world growth at 3.1% and says a shrinking group of AI-linked economies now carries the expansion
The fund raised India's forecast to 7% and cut Argentina's to 2.1%, while oil-importing emerging economies slow to 3.7% growth because energy averages $96 a barrel this year.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) put global growth at 3.1% for 2026 in its World Economic Outlook, released in Bangkok. Outlets read that number differently. CNBC and the Associated Press described it as an upgrade from July's 3.0%. Argentina's Ámbito reported it as a cut. Both readings agree that growth is slowing from 3.5% last year, and the fund left its 2027 forecast at 3.4%.
The fund said artificial intelligence (AI) investment is supporting growth while war and debt threaten the outlook. MarketWatch described the result as a K-shaped world economy: countries less exposed to the oil shock and tied into AI supply chains pull ahead, and energy importers fall behind. The IMF expects oil to average about $96 a barrel this year, up nearly 41%, and global inflation to reach 4.7%. It said just 32 economies now generate 95% of global growth, down from 54 in April. Growth in emerging and developing economies slows to 3.7% from 4.5% in 2025.
India sits in the upper branch of the K. The fund raised India's forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2027 by 0.6 percentage point to 7%. Mint noted that the Reserve Bank of India, the World Bank and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have also upgraded India, and that energy prices remain the main risk.
Argentina moved the other way. The IMF lowered its 2026 growth estimate to 2.1% from 3.5% and expects a recovery in 2027, according to Clarín. Economy Minister Luis Caputo is due to meet IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva in Thailand. Former economy minister Domingo Cavallo has meanwhile criticized Javier Milei's program for excessive tightening and falling investment.

As long as energy stays expensive and AI investment keeps rising, global growth will concentrate in a shrinking group of energy-secure, technology-exporting economies, while oil-importing emerging markets keep receiving downgrades, weaker currencies and tighter monetary policy.

Two forces now drive global growth: capital spending on artificial intelligence and the price of energy. The IMF's numbers show that both forces concentrate the gains. Economies that build chips, servers and power equipment, and that import little oil, capture most of the investment. Oil-importing economies without AI exposure pay higher energy bills and higher imported inflation, which pushes their central banks toward tighter policy even as growth slows. A sustained drop in Brent toward the IMF's $96 average or below, or a sharp cut in capital-spending guidance from major cloud computing companies, would break this pattern.
