IMF Projects Africa Will Grow Faster Than China as the Iran-War Energy Shock Shifts Growth
The International Monetary Fund raised its 2026 forecast for sub-Saharan Africa to 4.5 percent and projects global growth of 3.1 percent with global inflation of 4.7 percent.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) expects Africa's gross domestic product (GDP) to grow faster than China's for the first time in decades, the Financial Times reports. The continent has done better than the worst forecasts made after the Iran war began. The fund raised its 2026 forecast for sub-Saharan Africa to 4.5 percent and kept the same rate for 2027, bne IntelliNews reported. It also warned that inflation is rising. The IMF's tables put China at 4.5 percent for 2026 and India at 7.0 percent on a fiscal-year basis, according to MAS Economics.
The overall outlook is weaker. The fund projects global growth of 3.1 percent in 2026 and 3.4 percent in 2027, with global headline inflation rising to 4.7 percent this year, Fortune reported. Growth is also concentrated in fewer places. The IMF counts 32 countries producing 95 percent of global growth, down from 54 in April. Within Africa the gap is wide. Oil importers are the most exposed to the higher energy and food prices that followed the war.
Indian business daily Mint argues that the world economy held up in 2026 but that volatility is far from over and could slow India's growth. As an importer of energy, India pays for every rise in the oil price through its current account and its fuel subsidies, even with the strongest headline growth of any large economy.

Recurring Gulf conflict keeps transferring income and growth from energy importers to commodity exporters in Africa and the Americas, so each flare-up widens the gap within the Global South and tempts exporters into debt that a later price fall will expose.

The energy shock moves income from importers to exporters. Oil, gas and metals producers in Africa and the Americas gain export revenue and fiscal room, while importers from Kenya to India pay through wider trade deficits and higher inflation. Africa outgrowing China comes partly from Africa's commodity windfall and partly from China's slowdown as an importer of energy. It does not mean China has become less important to the world economy. The consensus is likely to interpret the headline figure as a lasting shift in relative growth rates. The precedent argues for caution. During the 2000s commodity boom, investors spoke of "Africa rising," and exporters borrowed heavily in foreign currency. The 2014 to 2016 price collapse was followed by defaults in Zambia in 2020 and Ghana in 2022. The desk's read is that Africa's growth lead will last only as long as oil and metals prices stay high. Exporters will use this period of high prices to issue more dollar bonds within months, which raises their exposure to the next decline in prices. A quick de-escalation in the Gulf that brings Brent down sharply would shrink the African lead within a few quarters and test those new debts.

- New dollar bond sales by African oil and metals exporters. A wave of issuance would show that governments are borrowing against a windfall that depends on the war.
- Inflation readings in African oil importers such as Kenya and Ethiopia. Rising prices there would show how uneven the regional average is.
- India's monthly trade deficit. A wider gap would show that the energy shock is limiting growth in the fastest-growing large economy.
