Russia Says It Downed 635 Ukrainian Drones Overnight as Strikes Hit Southern Regions
Air defenses reported roughly 150 drones over the Rostov region alone, and officials in Saratov and Engels said civilian infrastructure was damaged.
Russian air defenses destroyed 635 Ukrainian drones over the country overnight, the defense ministry said, in one of the larger single-night barrages reported during the war. State outlets TASS and RIA Novosti carried the figure, while the governor of the Rostov region told Kommersant that nearly 150 drones were downed over his region, striking the city of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky and seven districts.
Local officials in Saratov and Engels reported damage to civilian infrastructure and some injuries, according to the independent channel Ostorozhno Novosti. Several regions, including Perm and Belgorod, declared and then lifted drone-threat alerts through the night. The figures come from Russian sources, and Ukraine has not detailed the operation.
The scale points to a sustained campaign rather than isolated raids. Ukraine has focused deep strikes on Russian refineries, energy nodes, and logistics, aiming to raise the cost of the war for Moscow, while Russia continues its own strikes on Ukraine's power grid.
Part of a tracked trend
Ukraine's Deep Strikes on Russian Energy and Logistics
Ukraine sustains a campaign against Russian refineries and supply lines over the next 3-6 months, pressuring Moscow's oil revenue while Russia retaliates against Ukraine's grid.
Veracity: Plausible
58/100- If true, who benefits
The Russian defense ministry, whose narrative of near-total air-defense success minimizes the damage Ukrainian deep strikes inflict on refineries and logistics.
- The nuance
The 635 figure comes from Russian state sources and is uncorroborated by Ukraine, and the "all downed" framing omits how much reached its targets, with independent outlets reporting damage in Saratov and Engels.
An open-source-intelligence read of how likely this story is true with its real nuance, not a judgment of any outlet. It assesses the claim, weighing independent and adversarial reporting. How we label confidence.
What this means
A campaign this large, if sustained, pressures Russian oil-processing capacity and the budget revenue that funds the war, which is the point of striking refineries and logistics rather than front lines. Exposed are Russian energy throughput and, through it, the crude and product flows Moscow can export. The effect on global markets is indirect but real, because every damaged refinery shifts the balance between Russian crude exports and refined-product supply. Whether this becomes a lasting constraint depends on how quickly Russia repairs and defends these sites.
