Traders who had bet against digital assets lost about $2.74 billion in a single day, the largest short-side liquidation CoinDesk records outside the October 2025 crash.

Bitcoin rose above $69,000, ether gained 18% to about $2,250, and the total value of digital assets moved above $2.32 trillion. CoinDesk reported that every major token except tron posted a double-digit weekly gain, and it identified the United States Treasury's decision to double its long-dated bond buybacks as the cause.
Leveraged trading positions amplified the rally. Traders holding bearish positions lost $2.74 billion in a single day, an amount CoinDesk said was larger than the short-side losses during the October 2025 crash. The Russian state agency TASS put the total across both directions at close to $3 billion over 24 hours, citing the derivatives tracker Coinglass, with most of it in bitcoin. Spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds took in $189.3 million.
The timing of the rally matters more than its size. Bitcoin did not rise on a monetary-debasement argument or on a geopolitical shock. It rose within hours of an operation that lowered long-term Treasury yields and eased financial conditions, and its price climbed most in the market segments where leveraged short positions were most concentrated.
Gold, which had already risen about 3.7% on Wednesday to roughly $4,500 an ounce, reacted to the same fiscal news through a different channel, a softer dollar and demand for a monetary asset that carries no counterparty risk. Bitcoin reacted as the risk asset most sensitive to interest rates.

Bitcoin Trades as a Risk Asset, Not Digital Gold
At each geopolitical or inflationary stress point, bitcoin keeps trading with liquidity-sensitive risk assets rather than with monetary metals, so the digital-gold framing continues to fail exactly when investors most want it to hold.
What this means
The rally shows what is currently setting the price of bitcoin. It is the cost and availability of dollar funding, not any function as a hedge against currency debasement. Leveraged traders and crypto exchanges gain from the volatility through fees and forced position turnover. Investors who hold digital assets as protection against fiscal deterioration are exposed, because the same asset that rose on cheaper Treasury funding will fall when that funding tightens. The distinction becomes visible when liquidity reverses. Gold's buyers are largely unleveraged, while a meaningful share of bitcoin's buying is financed with borrowed money.

Treasury long dated buybacks reduce net duration supply in the market, compressing term premium and long yields, which lowers the opportunity cost of holding non yielding assets like bitcoin.
