Pentagon Awards Boeing a $20 Billion Contract for the Navy's Next Carrier Fighter

The Pentagon selected Boeing to build the United States Navy's next generation of carrier-based strike fighters in a contract valued at about $20 billion, officials said on Tuesday. The aircraft, designated F/A-XX, falls under the Next Generation Air Dominance programme and is intended to replace the F/A-18 in the carrier air wing.

The award consolidates Boeing's position in American combat aircraft after it also won the Air Force's next-generation fighter. For a company whose commercial division has absorbed years of losses, a multi-decade naval aviation franchise changes the shape of its earnings base.

The cost side of the same industry is visible elsewhere. The Russian agency TASS, citing the Japanese business daily Nikkei, reported that Japan's programme to modernise its F-15 fighters is running significantly behind schedule because of rising component prices. Japan has contracted with Boeing to upgrade roughly 70 of its more than 200 F-15 aircraft, and cost increases and schedule extensions in that work were already identified in earlier bilateral discussions with Washington.

Both items describe the same constraint. Governments across the Indo-Pacific are committing to larger air forces while the supply chain that builds and maintains them is delivering later and charging more, which means announced budgets buy fewer delivered aircraft than the headline numbers imply.
