Thirty-Year Treasury Yield Reaches Highest Level Since 2002 as Traders Halve the Odds of an October Fed Hike
Long-dated borrowing costs rose even as New York Fed President John Williams cooled expectations for another increase, while gold held near $4,150 an ounce and the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 51,349.92.
The long end of the United States government bond market moved in the opposite direction to the Federal Reserve's near-term policy signals on Tuesday. The 30-year Treasury yield touched 5.612% during the session, the highest intraday level since June 2002, and settled just below that mark. Equities drifted lower with it. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 131.59 points to 51,349.92, the S&P 500 slipped 0.16% to 7,670.84 and the Nasdaq Composite eased 0.09% to 26,797.54, according to CNBC and TheStreet.
The move happened while the market was becoming less convinced of another rate increase. Israeli business daily Globes reported that after remarks by a senior Fed official the previous evening, the implied probability of an October hike was cut sharply from around 70% to below 50%, with Tokyo shares climbing about 1.7% on Wednesday morning. The official was New York Fed President John Williams, who said that after the September decision there is no need for urgency, while adding that one more increase may be appropriate later this year. Fed Governor Michael Barr has taken the other side, saying his base case still calls for further policy tightening to return inflation to target.
The starting point matters. Under Chair Kevin Warsh, the Fed raised its benchmark rate by a quarter point in September to a range of 3.75% to 4%, its first increase in more than three years, with the inflation gauge the Fed watches most closely (the personal consumption expenditures price index) running nearer 4% than 2%. A policy rate close to the inflation rate leaves very little real compensation for lending money for thirty years, and long-dated buyers are pricing that gap themselves. The Financial Times, surveying global debt levels, concluded that major economies may not be at the edge of disaster but that their room for manoeuvre is shrinking.
Hard assets stayed firm through the repricing. Gold rose about 0.9% on Tuesday to roughly $4,152 an ounce, trading near $4,158 in New York hours, and silver held around $61 after opening at its lowest level since early August. Equity risk appetite is not uniformly defensive. JPMorgan's tactical strategy team, which warned on the market a month ago, has turned bullish and favours chip and artificial-intelligence names inside the S&P 500.

The likelier outcome over the coming weeks is that the October 28 meeting resolves less than investors hope, with long yields staying near current levels and gold retaining a bid regardless of whether the Fed moves, because both trade off the real-return gap rather than the headline decision. A clear downside surprise in the next inflation and employment prints, or a credible deficit-reduction plan from Washington, would undercut that read.
