Machado reaches Caracas to large crowds as Washington puts economic stabilization ahead of an election date

María Corina Machado, the Venezuelan opposition leader and 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, arrived in Caracas late Sunday after a daylong caravan through five states. Thousands of supporters lined the route. She had first reappeared at a church in Lara state. It was her first appearance in Venezuela since December, about a month before US forces captured Nicolás Maduro and Washington accepted his vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, as acting head of state.

Accounts spreading online on Monday said security forces had detained Machado and that President Donald Trump had warned Maduro to keep opposition leaders "SAFE and ALIVE." Those details match events of January 9, 2025, when agents briefly held Machado after a protest and Diosdado Cabello, then interior minister, denied she had been arrested. Polylog found no credible report of a detention since her return. Asked about her arrival on Sunday, Trump said he knew nothing about it but hoped she was safe.

The dispute now is over timing, not over who holds power. Rodríguez was originally meant to serve 90 days as acting president. She has stayed in office without calling a vote, and she told the United Nations General Assembly in September that Venezuelans would choose the "right moment" for an election, according to the Associated Press. US officials have put economic stabilization first. Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote that Machado's safe return was "the direct result of the US supported reconciliation talks." As of Sunday, Caracas had issued no official reaction.

Al Jazeera and Bloomberg both describe her return as the biggest test so far of Rodríguez's limited political opening. The government's recent conduct points in two directions. On October 23 the opposition held what Reuters called its first nationwide protest in nearly two years, demanding an election as early as 2027. That day the Bolivarian Intelligence Service (SEBIN) detained seven participants, according to the US-based outlet Voz.

Creditors have the most direct financial stake in how the standoff ends. Venezuela and the state oil company, Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), remain in default on most of their bonds. The largest creditor group now holds about 37% of the outstanding debt, at least $22 billion in face value, and is preparing for talks. The Rodríguez government plans to acknowledge about $240 billion in total debt, and analysts expect the restructuring to take years.
