Kumamoto Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 36 as Survivors Face Extreme Heat

The death toll from the earthquake in Japan's Kumamoto region has risen to 36, and survivors now face extreme heat. The Japan Times reported that maximum temperatures were expected to reach 35 degrees Celsius or higher through the weekend and into next week, with Monday forecast to reach 40 degrees. The powerful earthquake, which registered the top level of 7 on Japan's seismic intensity scale in Hikawa, cut off water and electricity across affected areas.

The human cost is visible in the details of the response. The South China Morning Post reported that evacuees unable to reach relatives sought shelter at a local animal hospital, one sign of how residents are adapting to damaged infrastructure. The Japanese agency Jiji Press described residents clearing debris under intense sun, with some giving up their days off to help, as aftershocks continued across the region and neighboring areas.

The combination of a major earthquake and a heat wave strains emergency services in two ways at the same time, testing water, power, and medical systems in a country that is already among the best prepared for seismic disasters.
