Reserve Bank of India raises its repo rate to 5.50%, its first increase since February 2023
The central bank also shifted its policy stance from "neutral" to "calibrated tightening." The rupee held near 96.4 per dollar after the decision, and traders had largely expected the move.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) raised its policy repo rate, the benchmark rate at which it lends to banks, by 25 basis points (a quarter of a percentage point) to 5.50% on Wednesday. Its six-member monetary policy committee (MPC) also changed the policy stance from "neutral" to "calibrated tightening." Mint reported the change. Nikkei Asia reported that this is the central bank's first increase since 2023. According to FXStreet, the committee had held or cut rates at 21 consecutive meetings before this one.
The reversal came quickly. Less than a year ago, the committee cut the repo rate to 5.25% and described the economy as being in a "Goldilocks" period, with headline inflation at 0.3% in October 2025. By August 2026, consumer price inflation had reached 4.8%, a 22-month high and above the RBI's 4% target, Moneycontrol reported before the meeting. Analysts named four sources of price pressure: high crude prices, a weak monsoon, tighter global financial conditions, and a weaker rupee, which raises the cost of imports. Brent crude has stayed above $100 a barrel for most of the past month, and India imports most of the crude it refines.
Borrowers will feel the change soon. Floating-rate home and retail loans, whose interest rates reset over time, are often linked directly to the repo rate. For those loans, Mint's explainer says monthly payments will rise or repayment periods will lengthen, and lenders will begin passing on the new rates shortly.
Markets had prepared for the hike. State Bank of India (SBI) Research had forecast a 25-basis-point increase in October and another in December, with the repo rate reaching 6.25% by the first half of 2027. The rupee traded at about 96.37 per dollar after the announcement and barely moved.
Even after the hike, the policy rate sits only about 0.7 percentage points above the latest inflation reading. Measured that way, real interest rates in India remain low. The new stance commits the RBI to further increases if energy costs keep passing through into domestic prices.

Oil Importers' Central Banks Turn to Hikes
While the Gulf war keeps crude above $100, central banks in large oil-importing emerging economies will keep reversing earlier rate cuts to defend their currencies against imported inflation, raising local borrowing costs whatever the state of domestic growth.
What this means
The mechanism is imported inflation. High oil prices and a weaker rupee raise domestic prices, and the RBI has chosen to defend the currency and its inflation target at the cost of growth. Indian borrowers with repo-linked loans lose first. Banks gain margin for a time on loans that reprice faster than deposits. Indian government bonds and rate-sensitive sectors such as housing and consumer credit face higher discount rates. The hike itself was priced, as the flat rupee shows. What is new is the "calibrated tightening" stance, which tells markets the bank expects to hike again. The consensus treats this as a one- or two-step adjustment. That view assumes oil eases, but the oil premium now depends on tanker attacks in the Gulf, which the RBI cannot influence. The closest precedent is 2013, when the RBI raised rates to stop a fall in the rupee and the currency stabilised over the following months. The desk's read: if Brent stays near or above $100 through November, expect a second 25-basis-point hike in December and similar moves from other Asian oil importers within months. A settlement around the Strait of Hormuz that brings crude back toward pre-war levels would prove that read wrong and would let the RBI pause after one move.
What to watch
- India's September consumer price figures, due in mid-October. A reading above August's 4.8% would make a December hike close to certain.
- The rupee against the dollar in the coming weeks. If it keeps weakening despite the hike, the RBI may need larger increases or more currency intervention.
- Whether other oil-importing central banks in Asia also move toward tightening. That would show that the oil price, rather than India's domestic conditions, is setting the regional rate cycle.

At 5.50% the repo rate sits only 25 basis points above the 5.25% level set less than a year ago, so the stance change to calibrated tightening carries more signal than the hike itself.
