A Long March 7A rocket exploded shortly after lifting off from the Wenchang launch site on Hainan island, destroying the vehicle and the ChinaSat 4B communications satellite it carried. The break-up occurred roughly 85 seconds into the ascent during main-stage flight. The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation has not issued a technical statement on the cause.
The impact extends beyond a single satellite. The YF-100 kerosene-and-oxygen engine used on the Long March 7A is common across China's modern launch fleet, so a failure investigation touching that engine constrains the launch schedule broadly, including missions tied to the country's lunar programme.
Japan moved in the opposite direction on the same day. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency launched the ninth H3 rocket carrying a Michibiki satellite for the country's regional navigation system, the first H3 flight with an operational payload since a launch failure last December.
Both events belong to the same industrial contest. Satellite navigation, communications and imaging are now infrastructure for shipping, agriculture, finance and weapons guidance, and both Beijing and Tokyo are building capacity they control end to end rather than rent from an ally or a competitor. Launch reliability is the constraint that decides how fast either can do it.
