While gold sits near $4,280 an ounce, bitcoin's recovery is measured against the price level it reached on Wednesday rather than against its own past peaks.

Bitcoin opened Friday at $84,378 and traded near $85,200 later in the morning, roughly $471 above the previous day and about $24,600 below where it stood a year earlier, according to Yahoo Finance's daily price report. Bitcoin and ether both posted weekly gains near 10% after pulling back from the levels they reached on Wednesday. Bitcoin's market value stood near $1.33 trillion.
The comparison with monetary metals is unflattering for the digital-gold thesis. Over a week in which negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz moved oil prices by several dollars and the 10-year Treasury yield climbed further, gold held near $4,280 an ounce while bitcoin remained far below its year-earlier price and traded in line with equities and the artificial-intelligence trade. That is the behavior of a liquidity-sensitive risk asset, not a monetary hedge.
Protocol development continued on its own schedule. Researchers have mapped a route to Zcash-style shielded transfers denominated in bitcoin that would run alongside the network without changing consensus rules, though the design still lacks a finished mechanism to lock real bitcoin into the private system and release it again. On the XRP Ledger, activation of the Batch feature, which would let users bundle up to eight transactions, slipped to October 9 after validator support briefly fell below the network's 80% threshold, which reset the two-week waiting period required before activation.
Both items point to the same constraint. Digital-asset networks change through negotiated coordination among operators, a slow process that does not produce the kind of monetary-scarcity story the price narrative depends on when investors are actually frightened.
Part of a tracked trend
Bitcoin Trades as a Risk Asset, Not Digital Gold
At each geopolitical or inflationary stress point, bitcoin keeps trading with liquidity-sensitive risk assets rather than with monetary metals, so the digital-gold framing continues to fail exactly when investors most want it to hold.
What this means
The mechanism is sensitivity to funding conditions. Bitcoin's marginal buyer is leveraged and driven by available liquidity, so when short-term rates rise and the term premium widens, bitcoin behaves like a long-duration equity rather than like reserve money, while central-bank and physical buying keep gold's price from falling. Those exposed are holders who treat digital assets as a hedge against monetary disorder, and crypto-linked equities whose earnings track trading volume. The precedent is 2022, when a Federal Reserve hiking cycle cut bitcoin's price roughly in half while gold held most of its value. The likelier outcome over the coming weeks is that bitcoin keeps tracking the Nasdaq Composite and the artificial-intelligence sector more closely than it tracks gold, on condition that policy rates stay restrictive. A genuine decoupling, meaning bitcoin rising while equities fall on a monetary or geopolitical shock, would contradict this reading and would mark a change in bitcoin's investor base worth attention.
