Meta's Higher AI Spending Plans Drive a 2.6% Nasdaq Drop and Push Money Into Japanese Bonds and the Yen

Chip-equipment makers fell as much as 12%, and OpenAI cut its fundraising valuation target to $1.25 trillion from $1.4 trillion after some investors refused the higher price.

The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.6% on Thursday after a batch of earnings reports renewed doubts about how much the largest technology companies are spending on artificial intelligence (AI). The S&P 500 fell 1.2%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended little changed. Al Jazeera described the decline as part of an ongoing disagreement among investors over whether AI valuations have become a bubble.

Meta Platforms accounted for most of the selling. Its third-quarter revenue and profit beat forecasts, but the company raised its capital-spending guidance, and its shares fell about 7%. Shares of companies that make equipment for producing AI chips fell further. Lam Research lost 11.76%, Applied Materials 8.18% and Advanced Micro Devices 8.13%, according to market data compiled by Bloomingbit.

The selling spread to Asia. The Nikkei 225 fell 2.65% to 62,908 on Thursday, and the dollar fell below 156.68 yen, a level that had previously drawn buying support on each earlier test. Three of the Nikkei's four largest companies depend directly on AI demand. On Friday the Financial Times reported that Japanese government bonds and the yen rallied as Asian stocks followed Wall Street lower. Later in the session the yen gave back part of that gain and Asian stocks recovered some ground, CoinDesk reported.

Private funding rounds showed the same resistance to high valuations. OpenAI lowered the valuation target for its latest funding round to $1.25 trillion after some investors would not accept $1.4 trillion. The company is seeking $30 billion before a planned initial public offering (IPO) next year, Folha reported, citing the Financial Times. In Asia, Nikkei Asia reported that public-market investors have begun questioning the region's data-center building boom.

The Israeli business daily Globes identified the underlying concern. In its Hebrew-language report, it wrote that investors were moving into German and U.S. government bonds because of the stock declines and "the fear about the scale of AI investments financed with debt." Investors are no longer questioning whether demand for AI exists. Meta's results showed that it does. They are questioning whether the returns will cover the cost of borrowed capital at today's interest rates. That question carries more weight because U.S. initial jobless claims fell to 194,000 a week before the Federal Reserve meets on Oct. 28.

AI Spending Meets Funding Limits

As AI capital spending shifts from internal cash flow to debt and private funding, each new spending increase will be answered with lower supplier valuations and higher financing costs until spending growth slows to what measured returns can support.

What this means

The mechanism is the cost of capital for AI construction. Hyperscalers, the largest cloud and AI computing companies, increasingly pay for data centers with debt, leases and private funding rounds instead of cash flow. When public investors mark down equity after each spending increase, every later funding round becomes more expensive. The companies most exposed are those whose revenue depends on someone else's capital spending: chip-equipment makers, Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese component suppliers, and the private-credit funds that lend against data centers. In the Austrian economic reading, this is the point where credit-funded investment must bear the real cost of capital, and projects that were viable only when borrowing was cheap come under review. The closest precedent is the telecom buildout of 1999 to 2001. Internet traffic kept growing, but debt-funded fiber capacity outran the revenue it produced, and equipment makers such as Lucent and Nortel lost most of their value before carriers cut their budgets. The consensus treats Thursday's decline as a one-day valuation correction. That view does not account for the funding side. The desk's read: Meta and its peers keep spending through 2027 because the contracts are already signed, while suppliers' valuations compress and spreads on data-center debt widen over the coming months. This depends on the Federal Reserve holding rates high. It would be proven wrong if the next round of earnings from hyperscalers showed AI revenue growing as fast as capital spending.

What to watch

The final valuation of OpenAI's round. A close below $1.25 trillion would show that private investors are now pricing AI the way public markets did on Thursday.
The Federal Reserve's Oct. 28 statement. A signal that rates stay higher for longer would raise financing costs for every debt-funded data-center project.
The yen against the dollar. A sustained yen rally would show Japanese investors repatriating capital, which would add selling pressure on the foreign tech stocks they hold.

Chip equipment makers, which sell into higher capex, fell more than Meta, which raised it, so investors appear to be pricing a peak in AI spending rather than a cost to Meta.
